The subconscious mind is the store room with an unlimited capacity; all your memories, past experiences, deepest beliefs, everything that has ever happened to you is permanently stored. In simple terms, the subconscious is a part of you that is outside of your conscious awareness, that creates automatic programs to make functioning easier in life, without having to pay attention on everything you are doing.

Like driving a car, a beginner who is still learning to drive would be completely focused on driving, without engaging in a conversation with anybody in the car. But after few weeks or months of practice, that person would be at ease while driving , since its become a habit and is registered in the subconscious mind.

Subconscious is active all day and night, whether you act upon it or not. controlling all functions of your body like breathing, heart beat and even our nervous system. Neuroscience has recognized that the subconscious controls 95 percent of our lives. The first six years of your life is when the subconscious mind is programmed and it is much more powerful than your conscious mind.

Its job is to ensure that you respond exactly the way you are programmed. Your subconscious mind makes everything you say and do fit a pattern consistent with your self-concept, your “master program.” That’s why it’s important that you filter what is embedded in it.

If the subconscious mind is so powerful, how does one reprogram it to make positive changes in one’s life; to reprogram our conditioned thinking which might be pulling you down from living the life you always wanted to. Your thoughts have the power to manifest in reality. The choice is yours!

Breaking Down Neural Pathways using Positive Affirmations

To change our lives, we need to do more than change our thoughts, we have to go deeper than that and change our programming. To program your subconscious mind, with the present “conscious” understanding that you’ve gained takes time, because it invloves bringing down the old neural pathways and creating new connections in your brain.

But the good thing is that the subconscious learns through repetition, that’s how it picked up the negative patterns or bad habits in the first place. By spending time each day affirming your new beliefs/programming or thought pattern, you can effectively change your life and reality.

Take time every day sowing the seeds of your new programming. Repeating mantras or positive affirmations have the power to raise your vibrations and make a lasting impression in your subconscious mind. According to Paramahansa Yogananda, “Loud or silent repetition of inspiring words has been found effective in various systems of psychotherapy; the secret lies in stepping up the mind’s vibratory rate.”

 

Affirmations to consider -

-“I love and respect myself.”
- “I am filled with peace, harmony and joy.”
- “I attract good things into my life.”
- “My positive thoughts produce positive things.”

Its not just repeating the same thing again and again, you have to break the barrier that prevents certain thoughts from entering the subconscious mind. If you feed good thoughts to your brain continuously, it will enter your subconscious mind. Feed only what you desire and not what you don’t want. In the process if you experience negative thoughts, sadness, anxiety, frustration etc., don’t try to resist those thoughts but acknowledge them and accept them in your conscious mind, and it will eventually fade away.

Meditation

Meditation takes you to deeper realms of consciousness, that allows you to access your subconscious mind. In normal waking consciousness, our brain is functioning in ‘beta’ pattern. This state is associated with alertness, but also with stress, anger and anxiety. In meditation, your brain patterns slow down and move first to alpha and then to theta and, in deep meditation, delta patterns.

It sounds difficult at first, but with regular practice, you will become an observer of your thoughts, instead of getting distracted by it. Allow you thoughts to flow and not react to them. This is when you begin to reap the benefits of accessing your subconscious mind through meditation.

Get Creative

Let your creative juices flow, take up artistic expression like painting, drawing, cooking, decorating, sculpting, pottery and so on. Nurturing your creativity can help you be more authentic and in closer touch with your subconscious self.

Follow your Instincts

Intuition is the connecting path between the subconscious and conscious mind. Your subconscious mind, applicably, converses with the conscious mind all the time. This is the inner voice, or “gut feeling”, which you must listen to. Positive people have been reported to have stronger sense of intuition.

There are other ways to unlock the power of the subconscious mind – clinical hypnotherapy, energy psychology and even brainwave entrainment – is effective. Once you start living in harmony with your inner self and your subconscious state your life will be transformed!

Most of our thinking, if we want to call it that, happens below the radar and undetected. We can work on lifting it up so it is visible.

No, we cannot expect ethics to happen just because we say they will. We use language which defeats the work we do in this direction. For example, managing people systems suggests this work is somehow like managing widgets. People are people and not something to be managed. When we make the effort to greet people as people and walk the leadership talk, things happen we might not be able to manage easily. Opening communication spaces is important in the work. It is not just about telling people what to do. It is about helping them succeed in that work.

A key word that is missing here is organization. Maturana and Varela suggested that structure is the general understanding something has and helps serve the function. Organizing the parts differently changes the particular function involved. A chair is a chair, but when organized differently serves different functions i.e. patio chair and dining room chair; a stool and a bench, etc.

 

The article makes some good points and adding organizing into the thinking means innovation (real innovation and not just rhetoric) happens in revolutionary and radical ways. I taught in such an environment for years, but it was threatening to the School functionaries (the word function is static) and they deep sixed it and it no longer resembles what it did. It looks more like a School.

We don't use the word tenure in Alberta, but our Minister of Education would have us believe that any amount of security is somehow problematic. Actually, with the use of part-time contracts, there is already instability. I know teachers who are working part-time jobs because they cannot make ends meet on a part-time salary. The other aspect is that the employer via School managers have the power to reduce the contract as they see fit.

For a number of years, I taught students who mingled. This mingling of students of different ages, interests, and abilities is a rewarding experience. They learn sharing and giving in ways that is discouraged in the competitive class environment.

The second point about the difference between a learning organization and training organization is a takeaway. It suggests that what we learn in classrooms (perhaps the training part to some extent) is subtly teased out in the day-to-day life in work. It follows Senge's writing on learning organizations as opposed to the cult of training and indoctrination. I read an article yesterday about a person selling the idea that where he works is a learning organization. Having worked there as well, I think it is a training organization and indoctrinates.

Life-long learning is an important consideration, but what that means is contentious in a world where we value branding and being on the same page. What impact does a process, a violent one at that, like branding have on the learning of employees? Does it allow innovation to exist? I found this was not the case in School. It was usually about the latest fad a particular School manager saw as important and the learning was externally ordered. With a new manager came new directions i.e. the latest tech fad became 7 Habits.

A key takeaway is that leading, learning, and teaching are closely linked. Peter Vaill proposed that learning and leading are inseparable. Teaching is about learning and makes them inseparable. The three are more than linked. They overlap in ways that we cannot separate them and do them separately.

I found that the isolation was promoted from the beginning of teaching careers. It is a good idea to create communication spaces for teachers and have their voices heard more clearly. It is not just new teachers who need this. I think teachers of all experiences need the support of being welcomed daily.

Majors have begun to fade. It does not mean they are irrelevant, but they do not mean what they used to mean. For example, do all teaches who graduate with an undergraduate education degree teach? The answer is no. Many (I heard it was up to 20% in Alberta) do not enter classrooms to teach, but use the degree as a platform for work other than teaching.

 

What do the actual headings mean i.e. creative industries? They cannot be so vague they mean nothing.

The terms 'critical' and 'reflection' are sorely misunderstood in education. Being critical is often misinterpreted as being negative. 'Reflection' is also frequently distorted to mean "reflect on what you are doing wrong". Too often the students that we teach give negative feedback when asked to be critical. So to counter act this, educators initiate strategies such as '2 stars and a wish' and SWNI (strengths, weaknesses, new ideas).
These strategies are designed to make reflective practices a more positive experience for students. It teaches them that being critically reflective is not just a negative activity, that it is important to be positive and give feedback to help improve or make something better.

Karen Barad in Meeting the Universe Halfway suggests that reflection should be diffractive and Emmanuel Levinas suggested refractive. This suggests exploring the differences as the work we do is seen in the same way as light. Reflection bounces back with little change; whereas diffractive/refractive work creates a need to look closely at the blurriness and waviness that results.
