(From the article): By appreciating the value of feeling uncomfortable when challenged, the best leaders ponder, make personal changes, and improve their performance. Whilst feeling uncomfortable is a great step forward, actively seeking and being accepting of feedback is of even greater value.

Asking yourself, “What went well?,” and then, “What could I have done to be even better?,” is a great first step. Sharing with a colleague or two and then asking them to do the same job for you is the next added value.

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, March 29, 2014 2:33 PM

Leadership has been changing for some time, but not uniformly. It is not readily evident in education that hierarchy is a thing of the past. What this means is that we are educating children and youth in a model that theorists think is passe. No wonder we have a crisis. Practice and theory are not separate, they are fused.

Deborah Verran's comment, March 29, 2014 6:13 PM
Leadership is not just about having ability it is all about demonstrating that ability in practice i.e. standing up & accepting both responsibility & accountability

It can look simple but it is so clear! I love the fact of focusing on the why, the purpose, and find a way to get "yes" imply that people need to think about what they are doing, and not just producing and producing... Also, the idea that this is a task that cannot be done by one person, collaborate is a must as well as to take the responsibility and develop next practices.

Leading Teams: Find the Right Balance Between Hands-on and Hands-off

In engaging your team the first question you must ask yourself is what you want your team to accomplish.  Sometimes making a simple academic distinction helps to focus this issue.  Do you want your team to be primarily concerned with implementation? Or, do you want your team to be creative and innovative?
