These 27 Questions Will Help You (Really) Know Your Learners

These 27 Questions Will Help You (Really) Know Your Learners | Leadership | Scoop.it
What’s the point of creating a course that no one wants?

No point at all, right?

YET, we find hundreds of eLearning designers creating courses that nobody wants. Courses which the designers themselves can’t figure: who would want!

It should ALWAYS be the other way around.

Designers must first understand their target audience and then build content around their needs, circumstances, limitations, preferences, and wants. This means that one must move beyond the common descriptions handed out by SMEs, the manager, or even the client.

Hence, this post where I will talk about empathy mapping — an intuitive, yet highly powerful framework that uses a set of questions that puts you in your audience’s shoes. It is a great way for engaging with SMEs as well as performing your own research.

Engagement is about involvement, and motivation is much about personal growth and learning, so eLearning is a more and more common solution to workplace issues. If we could only make things more relevant and more impactful with these trainings; so many simply don't help people feel more a part of the team and aligned to the group goals. Top 10 Evidence Based Teaching Strategies

Dr. Deborah Brennan's curator insight, May 22, 2015 2:58 PM

These strategies are the essential foundation of what all good teachers do.  Every article and book that I have read about school improvement and effective teaching seems for focus on these same strategies.  We know it...but do we do it?  WITH FIDELITY?  I think that is often where it breaks down. These strategies need to be a part of EVERY lesson...EVERY day. They become highly effective when they are implemented consistently and intentionally.  With all teachers are required to do, it is easy to lose focus on intentionally using these effective strategies.

Alfio Gangemi's curator insight, May 24, 2015 8:38 PM

This is probably the best resource I have found for a pre-service and graduate teacher. As the title says it outlines the top ten evidence based teaching strategies and clearly describes each strategy and how and why they are effective. Very useful resource!.

Steve Whitmore's curator insight, May 27, 2015 9:39 AM

Which of these strategies could you incorporate into your therapeutic groups?  How do you think they might be helpful?

When you observe students in classrooms, do you see evidence of these practices?

Quick and dirty vocabulary gapfill: Olya Sergeeva

Quick and dirty vocabulary gapfill: Olya Sergeeva | Leadership | Scoop.it

"Apparently, just 12 lexical verbs (say, get, go, know, think, see, make, come, take, want, give, and mean) account for 45% of lexical verbs used in conversation. Biber and Reppern suggest that, since they are so frequently used in speech, these verbs require more attention in class than they currently do, judging by the coursebooks that they reviewed, and that they should be used more to exemplify various grammar structures.

I’m thinking of giving the students an occasional gap-fill exercise based on the reading and listening texts that we are working on, with these verbs gapped out. Finding and replacing the various forms of these verbs could be time-consuming, but there’s a free nifty little text editor called Notepad++ in which one can make such a gap-fill exercise in one click.

Tony Palmeri's curator insight, October 24, 2015 12:34 PM

I scooped this article because it relates to the concepts of leadership style detailed in the book "SuperVision". Yes, all leaders have a tendency to favor a particular leadership style, however, different methods are justified in different circumstances (especially in education). Something profound in this article is the idea that it is MORE difficult to transition from a democratic style to a authoritarian style of leadership. I also believe, that participative, shared leaderhship should be the default. When trust is cultivated with shared leadership it is more likely that staff will have faith that authoritarian decisions are done in the best interests of all.
