There is nothing wrong with mindful working, but it is a way of living that includes our work.

Alan Watts and his Zen concepts provide wonderful insights into the world we inhabit. He argued that we strive for things, but work is a foreign concept. In essence, work for the sake of itself is boring and counter to human existence. The key is play and enjoying what we do. The vast majority of people — up to 95 percent, in fact — believe they have a decent amount of self-awareness. And maybe you’re one of the lucky 10 to 15 percent who really does have an accurate view of themselves — but if we’re going by the numbers, well, the odds aren’t in your favor.

Those statistics are based on years of research from psychologist Tasha Eurich, author of the book Insight. “On a good day, 80 percent of us are lying to ourselves about whether we’re lying to ourselves,” Eurich says. Making things extra tricky is the fact that self-awareness has two components: Internal self-awareness is the ability to introspect and recognize your authentic self, whereas external self-awareness is the ability to recognize how you fit in with the rest of the world. “It’s almost like two different camera angles,” Eurich says.

The two are independent, entirely different variables, meaning you can have one without the other. For example, maybe you know someone who is a complete navel-gazer with a high level of internal self-awareness. Yet you and everyone else think this person is a selfish jerk, but because he never receives external feedback, he has no idea. Conversely, someone could have a high level of external self-awareness, a clear understanding of how they fit in with the rest of the world, without knowing what they want and what makes them happy. To be truly, fully self-aware, though, you need both components — a feat that’s difficult to pull off for pretty much anyone. But, it’s worth noting, not impossible.

One reason that empathy training programs have not worked or have had mixed results is that they train the participants in compassion, being nice, conflict resolution, baby and child care, and a number of worthy and related tasks. This is all excellent, and the use of empathic methods in these areas is making the world a better place, so keep it up.

 

There is nothing wrong with being nice and so on. Pardon the double negative: don’t not be nice. But something is missing – empathy. Expanding one’s empathy requires an engagement with one’s own inauthenticities around empathy. Most people would rather not look at their own blind spots about empathy. Most people would rather not look at how their own empathy breaks down and fails. Expanding one’s empathy requires engaging with one’s own resistance to empathy. Until we engage with our own resistance to empathy we will remain stuck in our blind posts, break downs, burn outs, and compassion fatigue.

"If you view it as a productivity aid, a creative boost, a career benefit or a mental health problem fixer, it won’t come through for you. When you approach meditation as X or Y, you’re still doing. And, again, the whole point is un-doing. So stop doing!"

There is a contradiction when we begin to think of mindfulness and meditation to improve productivity and benefit our careers in material ways. I meditate, but it does not always produce any results that I recognize in the immediate moment. Quite often, it is just being able to stand and be present in the world in a quiet way.
