Musical flashmob outside York Minster in support of Occupy London

Thank you to University of York People and Planet for organising this. Apologies for the bad singing! We might have looked organised, but this really was a flashmob! We just randomly found the pianist in the guy fawkes mask outside the Minster. We were also standing right in front of Guy Fawkes' birth place, with Guy Fawkes Inn just near buy and it was Guy Fawkes night!

several hundred people took part in a march to parliament this afternoon. but a huge police operation ensured they couldn't exercise their democratic duty to protest outside the democratic heart of the nation. however, with non-violent persistence the protestors got close, ending up outside the house of lords, a stone's throw (not that any were) from the square.

The protest movement that began with Occupy Wall Street is very clear about what it is against - an international capitalism that is cruel, unfair and untenable. But the movement refuses to say what it is for. Much of this refusal comes from a belief that modern capitalist society is extremely skilful at co-opting dissent and that any discussion with the media is the first step in being reabsorbed into 'the system'.

It also has the added benefit of irritating mainstream journalists and commentators.
