The Evolution of Magic Continues

The Evolution of Magic Continues | Las Vegas Entertainment | Scoop.it

Magic has always been about creating the impossible. Magicians have always been the ones to make people question the world around them. With the apparent ability to cause objects to move without explanation  vanish people, predict future events and even pass through walls; for magicians, there are no limits. Impossibility means nothing to these master miracle makers.

Copperfield Takes The Stage

In the early 90's it was all about David Copperfield. This quiet boy from New Jersey became the master of magic when he debuted on worldwide television at the age of 19 years old. His presentations combined elegant stories with breathtaking illusion. He was the first since Doug Henning to present these large scale magic to a viewing audience. As his talent progressed, David's TV specials expanded to include bigger and better illusions. He was the first person since Houdini to vanish a large scale object. Houdini vanished an elephant and Copperfield bested him decades later by vanishing a Lear jet. It was the first of many big moments for Copperfield and his team. Over the years he vanished the Statue of Liberty, a train car and escaped from a straitjacket while suspended from flaming ropes. These are just some of the highlights of an over 25 year career as the undisputed King of Magic.

Blaine Walks The Streets

In the later part of the 90's magic started to see a shift in what people wanted to see. There was a young kid from New York who took the idea of strong visual magic and brought it out of the theater and on to the streets of America. David Blaine became the pioneer of what is now known as Street Magic. He was able to capture the pure reactions of spectators by presenting them strong, powerful and sometimes emotional moments and re-defining what magic was perceived as. It was now more than just a hobby, it became an art form.

Nathan Burton Provides Magic With A Side of Laughs

Throughout this period of magical evolution countless other performers began to showcase their talents all over the world. One of those individuals was Nathan Burton. Burton began his magic career in California and eventually found himself headlining at competitions all over the world. He was also one of the star performers to be featured in the annual "Worlds Greatest Magic" television specials that became a staple of 90's magic on TV. His career spans many years and includes several appearances (no pun intended) on the hit TV show, Americas Got Talent. He has developed a headlining comedy magic show that made him one of the most recognized names in Las Vegas. After a stint at the V Theater he headlined at his own show inside the Flamingo, and now he brings his family friendly show back to Planet Hollywood as he has taken up residence inside the beautiful Saxe Theater.

Thanks to these (and many other) performers, magic is reaching a much larger audience than it had been in the past. You can experience these and many other astounding acts when you visit Las Vegas. With more magic in one city than almost any other place on Earth, no wonder Vegas has the nickname, The Magic Capital of the World. So the next time you're in town stop on by Saxe Theater and check out Nathan Burton: Comedy Magic and prepare to be amazed.

Introducing The Legendary Sammy From The Summit!

Introducing The Legendary Sammy From The Summit! | Las Vegas Entertainment | Scoop.it
Every few generations, society has the perk of witnessing a courageous artist blossom and rise to the top, forever leaving a mark on our culture and changing the way we think and look at many different issues. Over the past 70 years, few artists have been as courageous and progressive as the great Sammy Davis Jr.. With unquestionable talent, and a heart of gold, Sammy was not only an inspiration but a leader in all respects. Born into show business to an entertainer and a tap dancer, Sammy often had to hide his cultural roots which were African American and Cuban. Around the 1950’s Sammy had to begin telling everybody he was Puerto Rican for fear of the Cuban backlash that was sweeping the country at that time, on top of the negative stereotypes of African Americans in the early 1900’s. But Sammy didn’t see this the same way many others did, Sammy thought it was his mission to use his talents to change the way a man thinks for the better.

In the army, Davis was put into an integrated entertainment special services unit. Here he wowed and danced his way into the hearts of even the most prejudiced Americans of the time, reinforcing his belief that racism was a shallow thing indeed. After being discharged Sammy went back to Oregon to contribute to his families Dance routines, over time he ended up releasing 7 solo albums. His solo success contributed to Universal pictures hiring him to sing the intro to the hit motion picture “Six Bridges To Cross” in 1954.

In 1959 Sammy followed his good friend Frank Sinatra to the city of Las Vegas, there Sinatra formed what would be call the Rat Pack! But at first it was called “The Clan”, Sammy voicing his opposition to the name for obvious reasons led Sinatra to again change the name to “The Summit” and The Rat Pack was born. Early on in Sammy’s career though, he was still forced by most casinos to wait outside by the pool between shows, and they would force him to stay in a hostel on the Westside of town in between shows. African American entertainers at the time were not allowed even as much as a dressing room, not even dining in the casinos restaurants or drinking in the lounges were permitted.

As Sammy’s career skyrocketed and he became more and more in demand, Davis eventually had the power to pick and choose. He left every venue that segregated this way in the dust, and with good friends like Sinatra and Elvis, his words became pretty hefty around town. Soon an entire wave of integration hit Vegas with the help of other progressive entertainers, casinos began to loosen up and Vegas was quickly becoming known as a place for everybody no matter your creed or color. Undoubtedly the cosmopolitan atmosphere has become one of the biggest draws for the city of Las Vegas, and with all the contributions this town has made to civil rights nationally, it must always be remembered it could have never have happened without the late, great Sammy Davis Jr..

So come and see one of the greatest entertainers the country has ever known live on stage with the rest of “Sinatra’s Summit”, only at “VEGAS! The Show” today!

The Beatles Are Back Once Again in BeatleShow!

The Beatles Are Back Once Again in BeatleShow! | Las Vegas Entertainment | Scoop.it

Each decade there comes radical changes in popular culture that define generations. The 70's saw Disco, the 80's saw the rise of hard rock and the 90's saw Grunge. In the 60's there was one band that defined the music of that decade. The Beatles took the budding genre of Rock'n'Roll and turned it on it's head, introducing the world to a fresh new sound that saw an evolution throughout their career. They introduced a new live sound to the pop-rock genre and developed some of the earliest known prog-rock sounds, which saw them create something new and exciting that really drew people to their music.

The band began at a school in London when a young musician by the name of John Lennon was looking to start a music group. Lennon quickly became friends with a young Paul McCartney and the two began to play music together. A little while later a friend of Lennon's , George Harrison was invited to some watch the group perform a gig. Eventually Harrison auditioned to play lead guitar. After a lot of consideration he joined the group in 1959. As they got booked to play more and more they realized that they were without a steady drummer. A few of Lennon's art school friends would sit in from time to time, but eventually they brought in a young man by the name of Ringo Starr. The band recorded their first demo together in 1962 at Abby Road Studios in London. 'Love Me Do', 'Please Please Me' were among the first tracks recorded and they eventually became two of the most popular songs of the Beatlemania era.

After residencies in Hamburg and a growing popularity in London it was time for the Beatles to take their act across the pond to the United States. With some of their music having already made it over to the States, it was only a matter of time before their popularity took off. When they arrived pandemonium is not even an appropriate word to describe the scene. Thousands of fans arrived at the airport along with them and Beatlemania officially began. The next night they made their first nationally televised appearance in front of over 70 million people. The Beatles had arrived in a very, very big way.

From the moment they arrived The Beatles began to change the face of rock music. As their career progressed so did their musical styles, lyrical content and personalities. They evolved a genre over the course of an entire decade. Pop songs, love songs, progressive rock style instrumentation were all represented. Album after album, hit after hit they built a legacy that has stood the test of time. It was as if they created their own musical revolution that moved millions of people.

People have always wanted to relive those days. There are countless Beatles fans young and old wishing they could experience the iconic music of the worlds biggest rock band. If you find yourself in town, BeatleShow is a unique Beatles concert experience right here in Las Vegas. The band is comprised of some of the best Beatle musicians in the world and all of the music from every era of Beatles evolution is performed LIVE. It is truly the best Beatles concert experience you will find in Las Vegas.

The Copa Room

The Copa Room | Las Vegas Entertainment | Scoop.it

It's All About The Atmosphere

The Copa room remains one of the most infamous hot-spots of Vegas entertainment in history. The club itself was first put together by Jack Entratter himself who was already well known on the west coast as an up and coming hotel mogul. The club came after the first generation of hotel resorts popped up christening the soon to be Strip! While the El Rancho Vegas drew in patrons with its world class buffet, the Copa Room was a concept that had already made it big in New York City, and with the en\merging nightlife scene of Sin City, The Copa would prove the hottest spot in town! It was in the early 60’s when the mystique of Vegas was at its peak, stars like Dean Martin and the rest of the Rat Pack were still just small timers in the scene. Frank Sinatra could be found crooning little dive bars and gracing showrooms with surprise visits, while even Elvis could be found in town shooting some of the biggest name films in history. Even with all of these stars though, Vegas was still lacking a venue as cool as its inhabitants. While the Sands Hotel and Casino was nothing like the Flamingo or Tropicana of the time, Jack Entratter’s entrepreneurial spirit saw the perfect spot for his future super club.

The Copa Room

By the time the Club had been constructed, the film Oceans 11 was still in the process of shooting and all of the stars could be found on the Strip on a nightly basis. While it could have been Sammy Davis Jr. or Frank Sinatra one night, you could have Nat King Cole or Ella Fitzgerald the next! The long list of stars that graced the Copa’s stage is endless, taking the title of the most historical nightclub in Vegas! What else set the Copa apart from the rest were the special methods in which Entratter used to recruit his “Copa Girls!” Jack Entratter managed to set up the most rigorous recruitment process any showgirl had yet encountered, with a no mercy attitude towards the looks of his Copa Girls Jack created a formula that equaled success. While the popularity of the Copa Room became almost urban legend, no other club in Vegas would manage to climb to the heights set by the Copa. From its decorations, methods of entertainment and unique musical directors creating a genre of show all its own, the Nightclub scene after the Copa would never be the same!

The Evolution of Theater, Part 1

The Evolution of Theater, Part 1 | Las Vegas Entertainment | Scoop.it

Theater has had a long and rich history. While it will be impossible to explain every incarnation of the art, it is interesting to note some of the highlights along this expansive timeline. What began as the most simple form of entertainment has turned into a modern day marvel as there have been incredible advancements in technology that have allowed for some of the most spectacular productions the world has ever seen. If the people of ancient times could see just how far theater has come, they would surely be pleased. But much like everything in this world, it all started with an idea.

The Greeks first came up with the idea of theatrical productions not only as a form of entertainment for royalty, but to use it as a way to express personal, political and cultural ideals to its people. The three main forms of theater to come out of ancient Greece were comedy, tragedy and satire. Tragedy's tended to be very dramatic and dealt with a variety of cultural issues. Usually the plays involved some type of message to the audience and often ended with the death of one or several different characters. Comedy's were much lighter in humor, and featured a wide variety of characters. Much like tragedy plays, these pieces took current events in the cities and presented them in a more light-hearted manner. Out of Comedy, the final and most popular form of theater was created. Satire was most known for its outlandish depictions of society. All three became the foundation of modern day theater and each genre gave birth to subsequent styles of theater that we are all familiar with today.

In a lot of modern day theater still employs a lot of the techniques established by the ancient Greeks. From theater layout to presentation styles. One of the best parts about modern day theater is their continued tribute to those who came before them. You can even see recreations of those ancient plays all over the world. Nowadays you have theatrical hotspots like New York, London and Las Vegas. These places are widely considered to be the best place to see any type of show. Theater, musicals, productions shows, magic; there is a little bit of everything in all of these cities.

Las Vegas in particular is home to some of the best productions in America. It has long been considered the Entertainment Capital of the World for its diverse line-up of shows. Think of almost any style of entertainment and odds are, you will be able to see it in Las Vegas. It is almost like Vegas is the forefront of new and exciting things in the theater world. If the ancient Greeks could see just how far theater has come, especially in what was once empty desert, they would be quite pleased.

Be on the lookout next week for another post in the Evolution of Theater series as we explore more about Shakespearean theater and how it contributed to the rise of Vaudeville.

When it comes to outstanding talent and unequalled beauty, all of the girls in iCandy are beyond comparison, but today we want to give you a better look at one of the three gorgeous hosts of one of The Strips hottest productions. Felice Garcia began her career at the young age of 9, a born natural, Felice made her way on to the stages of talent shows and musicals for her school as well as performing for weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Church gatherings and numerous civic events. Throughout high school Felice continued to hone her skills and talents, evolving herself into the dynamic performer she has become today.

What she cites as one of her most notable experiences, is when she competed in and won a local version of American Idol in Reno called “Reno Idol.” Subsequently she was also the first runner up for the Miss Reno/Sparks contest in 2005. But Felice isn’t a native of Nevada, she was raised in the sunny and beautiful Carlsbad, California. She moved to Reno when she was a teenager to attend high school, from there she left during her junior year, and took a year to live abroad in São Paulo, Brazil. When she returned back to the United States Felice moved to Las Vegas to attend UNLV. Majoring in Vocal performance at UNLV, Felices’ talent didn’t go unrecognized for long as she landed the much coveted role of Principle Singer in the longest running and without a doubt one of the most historical shows in Las Vegas, “Folies Bergere”, at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino.

After her much vaunted run with the Folies, Felice moved on to “American Superstars” at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino. In this show she starred as famous country singer Carrie Underwood, her particular act was developed from the ground up by none other than Felice herself! Garnering positive reviews across the board, Felicia quickly began to become one of the most well known singers in Vegas.  In 2010 Felice competed in the 2012 Miss Henderson pageant, walking away with a victory and another level of exposure to add to her already glowing career. Using her growing fame, Felice indulged her inner philanthropist by using her shining personality and determination to help support such charities as “Artists 4 Kids”, “The Foundation to Assist Young Musicians” and “Ballroom for Schools” and even created her own organization called “Music and the Mind” to which she still to this day donates time and resources.

Nowadays, Felice serves as one of the 3 stars of “iCandy: The Show”, but she also has two productions she herself created to which she is the star of both. But like her Carrie Underwood tribute, her show “Country Diva” is a production paying homage to Carrie, Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert, while her other show called “Cover Girls” pays tribute to some of the classic old Las Vegas stars like the Rat Pack, while they also perform other Broadway and Rock and Roll classics.

iCandy: The Show -- Classic Burlesque For Modern Audiences

When Las Vegas was an up and coming, thriving city they had several things that made it great. The rise of entertainment the likes that most places had never seen before. Sexy dancers, topless revues ruled the Las Vegas Strip. Mix that in with big band music, gambling and high class hotels, Las Vegas was the biggest up and coming hotspot in the country. Sin City got its name from the feeling of 'naughtiness' one got by coming away to Las Vegas and taking part in things that differentiated from the norm. The burlesque shows were a highlight of the city especially for the high rollers and the business men that are coming to Vegas to have a good time. It was almost a form of rebellion for those seeing the shows. It was not something considered to be all that socially acceptable back then. There was no denying it that these shows were popular, and the popularity continued to flourish.

But it’s not all about the risqué numbers and beautiful women with nothing to hide, there is a subtle tone behind the Burlesque genre few can pull off. Now they use props, sassy comedy which almost gives it a feeling like an 1850's opera house. It can all easily be defined as a form of “rebellious theater” from back in the day, and our culture wouldn't be the same without those mean girls with the moves! As time went on the shows have evloved to include much less nudity, or none at all, to give every audience a chance to see these types of shows.

Today the modern Burlesque show takes on a form that is familiar but also very new. With the use of performing arts as well as satirical comedy these performances now have a feel that is totally unique. While you still get to see the beautiful women, it’s not as bad as it used to be (it might even be better!). You still get the revealing costumes, but now different burlesque costumes can be showcased giving you a real sense of history on top of it all. With all the influence the burlesque culture has had on America, some may even speculate that same attitude was what Vegas became built around, but that’s for you to decide.

Tara Palsha Dazzles On Stage in VEGAS! The Show

Tara Palsha Dazzles On Stage in VEGAS! The Show | Las Vegas Entertainment | Scoop.it

When Tara Palsha came to Las Vegas over 10 years ago, she had one goal in mind. She wanted to be a Las Vegas showgirl. Her hard work and determination proved to be valuable as she has quickly become one of the most recognizable dancers in the city. Between her dance moves and her fire-red hair, she is very hard to miss. With a practice schedule that would make even a top athlete cringe Tara has even found time to compete in local dance competitions. Having performed in some of the biggest shows in Vegas, she currently finds herself as the lead dancer in 'VEGAS! The Show' and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Her dancing career began 29 years ago and has taken her on an incredible journey that has seen her headline all around Las Vegas. Her dream of being like the showgirls she saw when she first arrived has more than come true. She first made waves as a showgirl in 'Jubilee'. As more people started to take, Tara was soon getting invites to dance in other shows. In 2004 she made her debut as a featured dancer in the sexy and scary 'Bite' at the Stratosphere. Three years later she landed as a performer in 'Fantasy' at the Luxor. It was in 2010 that she made her way to Saxe Theater to star in the biggest production show on the Strip in the last twenty years.

Since joining VEGAS! The Show she is looking to branch out and has begun to sing as well. A gradual change into singing would be good for her considering her body may not be able to keep up such an intense dancing schedule. Having danced for 29 years and now up to 12 performances per week, it is beginning to take a toll. Ever resilient Tara vows to keep performing no matter if it is dance, movies or Broadway. Copa Room Reborn in VEGAS! The Show

Copa Room Reborn in VEGAS! The Show | Las Vegas Entertainment | Scoop.it

Las Vegas in the early 50’s was still in the middle of a massive shift, culturally and economically. The spot that would give Vegas its reputation for “cool” was still in its dream phase. Legendary producer Jack Entratter was still hard at work at the Copacabana Club in New York, and The Sands hadn’t even been a forethought. That is up until 1952, after a few of the elaborate business deals Las Vegas became famous for, The Sands had clever-handedly been realized. All myth’s and rumors aside, after its opening night The Sands ended up as one of the hottest spots in town, as Producer Jack Entratter worked to make the Copa room the core of nightlife in the infamous city. A few months after its opening, Frank Sinatra had agreed to come and help his good friend Jack, as Sinatra’s career was in the midst of a downward spiral. With Sinatra’s new movie premiering just months before his landing the gig, and his spot as headliner for the hottest club in Vegas, Frank was soon back on top and loving every minute of it.

The next year, Entratter played to his knack for picking out beautiful girls, setting a standard and code on how to choose Copa Girls. Always polite, Jack asked for little besides “Look Pretty!” Entratter felt all his guests wanted were beautiful girls in colorful outfits, interacting with guests in a calm atmosphere, and it ended up becoming a formula for major success. Letting his entertainers deal for casino crowds ended up a huge attraction as well, who wouldn’t want your poker game dealt by Sinatra or roulette via Dean martin? Surely Entratter didn’t know he was creating a style and standard the city would live and celebrate, but he also didn’t know he had helped put together the foundation of one of the greatest draws Las Vegas would ever know, The Rat Pack. Nabbing Sinatra and taking him to the top boosted Entratters’ ego, and now Jack sought more talent to reinforce the already entrancing Sands and Copa Room. Staying on top wasn’t easy, enlisting huge names such as Dean Martin and Sammie Davis Jr. were measures to ensure the Copa Rooms’ reputation for being showbiz royalty. In 1960 the sands became the headquarters for filming the movie “Oceans Eleven”, starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior, Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford. During filming, the hotel organized an event for the stars called “Summit at the Sands” where the men for the first time all performed together on stage…the rest is history.

Audiences went wild for the Rat Pack, selling out every show, sometimes playing two times a night. Each member of the Pack would always pop in to the club or casino for a performance or a drink though nobody really knew when or with who else, making it even more of a draw to head to the sands on any random night as you’d never know who to expect! While the Rat Pack ran on into the history books, Vegas was stepping into its shoes for the first time, creating the timeless persona of Class the town became famous for. As time faded, the spectacle was replaced for others and so on, and the Golden Days of the lounge were soon over. But none of those men were ever forgotten, as they are remembered in tribute and dwell in the very soul of the city itself. Want to see the Copa Room Kings with your own eyes? Want to see the Rat Pack and the History of the Sands live on stage? Well there’s only one show in town that gives proper tribute to the Performers and the Venue that defined Las Vegas, and that’s “VEGAS!
