DSBN introduce First Nations language program

DSBN introduce First Nations language program | Languages Education | Scoop.it

The District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) is introducing Native languages to students and their parents through a First Nations language program.

Between 2006 and 2011 the number of Aboriginal people who said they can carry a conversation in an Aboriginal language decreased by two per cent. The DSBN wants to stop that number from decreasing by providing a First Nations Ojibway and Mohawk Language program for families to take together.

“We want the students as well as their parents to use the language in their homes in day-to-day conversations,” said Georgie Groat, the curriculum consultant for Aboriginal Education.

The curriculum for the course includes teaching the students as well as their parents basic everyday words. The goal of this program is to strengthen the First Nations languages and the strengthening of cultural values, traditions, family relationships and the relationships to the environment and the land.

The program is being offered from the beginning of October to the beginning of December online, along with three face-to-face sessions.
