How @BuzzFeed Automates Content #Localization Decisions

BuzzFeed has collected a lot of historical data over the years. Using heuristics and logistic regression, the model they have built can predict the type of article that might do well in other languages. For example, if the team were trying to identify what kind of content to adapt from the English-speaking to the Portuguese market, the model would go through data, including performance split by country, all historical articles, and all articles that have been translated from English to Portuguese in the past, and a ‘hotness score’ would be generated based on the output of the logistic regression. The higher the hotness score, the more likely it is that the article will be a success.

'Semantics' and Machine Learning for Lawyers

'Semantics' and Machine Learning for Lawyers  | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Ayfie CTO writes:  We believe text analysis and machine learning algorithms should not be run on some “bag of words” representation of the text, but instead on the key semantic concepts as extracted by natural language technology. This increases the quality of the output much more than just switching to a different machine learning algorithm. In one experiment we ran together with a customer regarding automated text classification, switching to “support vector machines“as a classification algorithm improved the outcome by three percentage points. However, using extracted semantic concepts instead of single words or arbitrary bigrams (two-word sequences) to feed that algorithm improved the quality of the output by 48%.

#ASR + Data 'Creation' to Preserve the Seneca Language

#ASR + Data 'Creation' to Preserve the Seneca Language | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

"Under the hood, it is data. With many Native languages, you don't have that volume of data," Jimerson said, explaining that some languages, while spoken, may not have as many formal linguistic tools—dictionaries, grammatical materials or extensive classes for non-native speakers, similar to those for Spanish or Chinese. "One of the most expensive and time-consuming processes of documenting language is collecting and transcribing it. We are looking at taking deep networks and maybe changing the architecture, making some synthetic data to create more data, but how do you make this work in deep learning? How do you augment data you already have?"
