How @BuzzFeed Automates Content #Localization Decisions

BuzzFeed has collected a lot of historical data over the years. Using heuristics and logistic regression, the model they have built can predict the type of article that might do well in other languages. For example, if the team were trying to identify what kind of content to adapt from the English-speaking to the Portuguese market, the model would go through data, including performance split by country, all historical articles, and all articles that have been translated from English to Portuguese in the past, and a ‘hotness score’ would be generated based on the output of the logistic regression. The higher the hotness score, the more likely it is that the article will be a success.

AI Generates a Data-driven US Road-trip Novel

AI Generates a Data-driven US Road-trip Novel | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

1 the Road reads as if a Google Street View car were narrating a cross-country journey to itself. This approach is compelling because it offers an opportunity to commune, for a few hours, with the vast network of data-collecting vehicles—drones, cars, devices—that now crawl our geography. “Much like the American literary road-trip books that inspired this project, it’s about capturing the time and place, and right now we’re in a time where we’re pretty confused and amazed by AI, so it captures that wonder and confusion,” film-maker Rapkin says. “Is it profound or is it nonsense? It’s both.”

A Font to Help You Remember What You Read—Sans Forgetica

A Font to Help You Remember What You Read—Sans Forgetica | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it
The idea behind the new font was to create a slightly more difficult reading experience, forcing the reader to absorb each word as they stare at it. It is based on a cognitive psychology concept called "desirable difficulty" that improves deep cognitive processing by adding a degree of difficulty to a task, which is needed, apparently, for better memory retention. To that end, the team made the font slant the opposite direction of normal italics in text, and also removed sections of each letter. It is also sans serif. The result is a font that is definitely harder on the eyes, if not the brain. It also slows reading, which may not suit students engaging in all-night cram sessions the night before finals.

Using Language Data Analytics to Evaluate Customer Relations

Using Language Data Analytics to Evaluate Customer Relations | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it
Studying the effectiveness of the words businesses use to talk to customers is tricky, but the rise of digital communications, social media, and big data is producing massive amounts of text that researchers can analyze and interpret using sophisticated new techniques. By combining natural language processing, computational linguistics, and psychology experiments, we can now uncover the true importance of subtle variations in how customers talk to front-line employees, and how customers respond to the words chosen by those employees. This allows us to understand the ways people communicate in business settings with growing precision, and what language is most effective.
