Low Resource Languages for Emergent Incidents (LORELEI) is a DARPA project to develop technology for languages about which translators and linguists know nothing.  An Ohio University team is using the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s Owens Cluster to develop a grammar acquisition algorithm to discover the rules of lesser-known languages, learning the grammars without supervision so disaster relief teams can react quickly.

More than half of insurance firms around the world have implemented machine learning technology into their business, says Earnix, a provider of analytics solutions for the financial services industry, who announced the results of a global survey of more 193 insurance executives today (May 31). Results revealed that over half (54%) of the executives surveyed said that their organisation was using Machine Learning for predictive analytical modelling. Of those deploying the technology, 70% said they were using it for risk modelling, followed by demand models (45%) and fraud detection (36%).

Audio Narration of Life for Blind Triplets

Triplets from Arlington, Va., who are completely blind from birth have been provided with glasses from Aira, a San Diego-based company that has developed smart glasses to help the blind and visually impaired with everyday tasks. The glasses are equipped with a camera, which feeds a video stream to a remote agent who then narrates what they see in real time over the phone for the user.

The next step will be to automate the narration to make the blind user completely autonomous. Microsoft is working on similar sensory deprivation issues with technology known as Ambient Intelligence. .Raises lots of questions about what a "narration of life" should contain in terms of visual content.

LG Electronics has introduced a smart speaker, dubbed 'the ThinQ Hub'. The smart speaker is based on the Clova AI virtual assistant or CLOud Virtual Assistant, developed by Naver, Yonhap press agency reports. Home appliances, including TVs, refrigerators and washers, can be activated through ThinQ Hub, the company said. Clova combines speech recognition and natural language understanding to respond to users' questions and to call up information, such as the weather and news.

This will be undertaken in partnership with several other companies and academia across seven European nations. Partners include Tunstall Healthcare and The University of Bilbao.
The project has been named EMPATHIC. The aim is to develop a conversational ‘Personalized Virtual Coach’, which will help elderly people to live independently within their home. The project is seen as important as the population of elderly people living within the European Union grows.
