The goal is to develop a wearable computer companion that can communicate in a way that’s natural to humans, but which isn’t as public as traditional voice recognition systems. Smartphones, smart watches, Bluetooth headsets, and more complex headsets like Google Glass all offer the ability to speak out loud and have voice recognition process commands and other instructions. However, that can be uncomfortable to do if you’re in a public place, or altogether inappropriate if you’re in a museum or other quiet space.

 People can create electrophysiological signals when they silently, voice words. These can be captured as conversational speech, allowing you to control a device, chat on the phone, but never utter a sound. The apparatus, though, is a give-away.

Fujitsu Develops Hands-free Speech Translator

Last year, Fujitsu developed a system in which stationary tablets with external microphones could identify different speakers, and translate their spoken language into another. Now, that technology has been shrunk down to a Wi-Fi-connected device that's worn by the worker, like a name tag.

Asians appear to be committed to developing different types of "miniaturized" or portable speech translator apps than Europe. Just as they did with Walkman tech years ago.
