#ASR + Data 'Creation' to Preserve the Seneca Language

#ASR + Data 'Creation' to Preserve the Seneca Language | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

"Under the hood, it is data. With many Native languages, you don't have that volume of data," Jimerson said, explaining that some languages, while spoken, may not have as many formal linguistic tools—dictionaries, grammatical materials or extensive classes for non-native speakers, similar to those for Spanish or Chinese. "One of the most expensive and time-consuming processes of documenting language is collecting and transcribing it. We are looking at taking deep networks and maybe changing the architecture, making some synthetic data to create more data, but how do you make this work in deep learning? How do you augment data you already have?"

@Voicera Launches Upgraded Conversational Understanding Transcription for Meetings | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Voicera is launching a Progressive Attention AI to power its in-meeting assistant, Eva.  Progressive Attention AI accurately mimics human-level attentiveness by extracting the most valuable moments from a meeting and applying progressively higher computational focus on the moments to produce much more accurate outputs.  This methodology performs twice as well as the most popular generic transcription engines currently on the market on real-world noisy meetings.

The dual-system AI approach focuses on both rapid response, broad-facing, and always-on, as well as deeper, only-when-needed content.

Can Transcribing Unwritten Indigenous Pacific Languages be Automated?

Can Transcribing Unwritten Indigenous Pacific Languages be Automated? | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Researchers in Queensland are harnessing artificial intelligence to document Australian indigenous languages, aiming to transcribe 40,000 hours of recordings by computers using machine learning.
Professor Janet Wiles said her group was working with communities in more than 100 places documenting oral languages. The group had developed speech-to-text technology for 12 languages in the Asia-Pacific region, including seven in Australia. “It generates a lot of audio recording and over a century, 40,000 hours of recordings have been collected,” said Professor Wiles. However, it was difficult to transcribe an oral language into a written form, she said.

Using #ASR to Help Verbatim Reporters

Using #ASR to Help Verbatim Reporters | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

What if a certain meeting (e.g. at the UN or similar) is so important that an accurate verbatim record must be released immediately after it ends? I asked a friend if he knew of any environment which would take a live audio stream, convert it into text, and at the same time, while continuing to add new text to the page as the audio stream continues, also allow humans to post-edit the previous automatically-recognised text. He remembered a set-up where journalists had created a bot which used the Google Voice API to ‘type’ automatically into a shared Google Doc, while the humans were editing the same doc. What a brilliant idea!

LT-Innovate's insight:

Need for more in-situ experimental data to improve usable tech for all kinds of transcription/adaptation situations. And less news about how to interrogate home hubs!

Reason8 is an AI Assistant for Managers and Meetings | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

US-incorporated startup Reason8 is launching its AI-powered transcription service. Later, the team reckons the tech will also be able to offer users linguistic and voice analysis — with the potential to act like a coach and offer individual guidance on improving in-meeting performance. "In-person meetings are the least digitized field in personal communications,” says co-founder Vlad Belyaev, discussing the idea behind the product. “It is a huge market. All of us have meetings, and make meeting notes, write meeting summaries, meeting minutes."

LT-Innovate's insight:

Disrupting meetings in the "digital management" sense. Multi-person interactions are hard to transcribe. But the conversational, argumentative data will be useful.

Zoom Research: How will AI, AR, and VR Impact Meetings? | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Results of a survey on worker opinions about meeting tech.

Out of all of these new technologies, respondents were most excited about AI.
73% of people surveyed believed AI would have a positive impact on their physical and virtual meetings. It was lower for AR at 67% and only 53% for VR. As we dug into the results, the AI applications for some of the most taxing tasks associated with meetings are relatively clear. Most respondents had a much harder time imagining the applications for AR and VR. We hypothesize consumer technologies like Alexa and Siri have made AI a little more tangible for the average professional.

Otter.ai App Can Transcribe Meeting Speech in Real Time

Otter.ai App Can Transcribe Meeting Speech in Real Time | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

"Our technology is quite different," said Liang, in his interview with ZDNet. "We call it 'Ambient Voice Intelligence' and we use the word ambient to indicate that this is working in the background... Your brain can only remember 10-20% of the information [from a meeting]... So we thought we can help people capture that information and then search for it really fast."
The search is the best feature. Once the recording is finished, the app's machine learning automatically creates about 10 keywords so that you know what the meeting was about. And you can start searching the full text right away. Also useful is that once you hone in on a keyword, you can hit the play button to listen to the section of the audio where it occurred.
