Baidu's Deep Voice 2 TTS tech could be used on digital assistants that are controlled through voice commands that respond by speaking to their users. It also sees potential in text-to-speech applications like ebooks. “The ability to quickly synthesize multiple human voices will have a huge effect on products such as personal assistants and eBook readers in the future. For example, each character of your Ebook could have a unique voice when you list to the Ebook,” the company wrote in a blog post.

SpeechCode - New Printable Assistive Technology that Enables Products to Talk

Speech Code, a free app, is a new data code in universal design that provides unrestricted information access to all, regardless of age, disability, or reading ability. It can transform any type of textual information into a colored, printable data code, which users can scan with the SpeechCode app. The app then decodes and presents the content with 100% accuracy as text on the user's smartphone or in an audible format using text-to-speech technology.

Computer-on-a-Ring Reads Text Out Loud

A team at MIT's Media Lab are working on a new device which could improve how the visually impaired interact with text. This computer on a ring (FingerReader), analyzes text and reads it out loud. The device starts working when the wearer traces their finger over a line of text—much as young readers do when they're just starting out.

A Dublin-based voice technology startup that has recently announced a €7m funding round has nabbed one of Google’s top voice technology engineers, Ian Hodson.
Mr Hodson had led Google’s global text to speech efforts, which are used in a wide range of Google’s products including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Android. He has joined the Dublin company as an ‘architect’.
Voysis, set up by Peter Cahill, has built a voice recognition system that specialises in natural language processing and text to speech capabilities. Earlier this year, it raised €7m from the venture capital firm Polaris Partners through its European venture partner Noel Ruane.
