Using #NMT to Ensure Low-Latency Speech Translation | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in Germany, "In this work, we aim to remedy the problem of partial sentence translation in NMT," the researchers wrote. "Ideally, we want a model that is able to generate appropriate translations for incomplete sentences, without any compromise during other translation use cases."  Their adaptation of NMT achieved high-quality translations at low latency, minimizing the number of corrected words by 45 percent. In the future, their study could have meaningful practical implications, helping to develop better tools for real-time speech translation.

The Hearables Revolution - Speech Translation, etc.

The Hearables Revolution - Speech Translation, etc. | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Silicon Valley is lining up in-ear computers as the future of how we interface with our digital world, making audio the platform for what we do through our phones. With voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant and Cortana on hand to take commands and issue replies (such as finding a restaurant and directing you to it), the idea we ever used to walk around staring at our phones for this information will seem faintly ridiculous.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Hypothesises that audio/ear-pods will replace text interfaces, including automated spoken translation. The number of audio translation devices suddenly hitting the market (see earlier news items in 2017) in Europe, th US and Asia supports this prediction.

Google Earbuds Translate 40 Languages in Real Time

Google Earbuds Translate 40 Languages in Real Time | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Google Pixel Buds are earbuds that connect wirelessly with Google’s latest smartphones, but more importantly, they’re able to access Google Assistant, the company’s virtual personal concierge, which launched exactly a year ago. Through this software, Google claims the earbuds can translate 40 spoken languages nearly in real time—or at least, fast enough to hold a conversation.

LT-Innovate's insight:

In the wake of Asian tech firms. The interesting dimension of this functionality will be how people encounter/relate to kickstart the translate operation, and how they handle misunderstandings, how they adapt their speech to the system rather than vice versa. Plenty of interesting sociolinguistic data will flood back to the developers.

Timekettle’s WT2 Real-time Translation Earpieces

Timekettle’s WT2 Real-time Translation Earpieces | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

This ultra-simple method of sharing earpieces means there’s no fuss or interface to deal with. You talk as if talking to someone who speaks your language, complete with eye contact and ordinary gestures. This is the main thing Wells Tu, TimeKettle’s founder, wanted to achieve. He and I talked (in English and in Chinese) about the complexity of communication and how important things like body language are. The simplicity of operation was also important, he said, if you were to use the WT2 with people who’d never seen or used it.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Another attempt at an ear-wear speech translation solution.
