Kika's customized keyboard for mobile brands supports 22 official and 18 non-official Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu. It also supports the three most commonly spoken languages in Indonesia: Indonesian, Javanese, and Sundanese. Each language is supported with AI-powered text prediction and autocorrection and provides ease of switching from local characters to latin letters. Mozilla’s ‘“Common Voice” project, which asks users to donate their voices in order to create a bank of speech data to run machine learning algorithms, has gone multilingual. It is now accepting donations in German, French and Welsh, with acceptance of speech samples in languages ranging from Cornish to Tamil, Uzbek to Sakha all pending.
The open source giant wants the project to be “a tool for any community to make speech technology available in their own language”.

This uses an unsupervised machine-learning model to train a supervised neuro-linguistic programming model. Qordoba’s unique technology allows users to actually measure the emotional content of product and marketing copy across 21 languages.

A study, by Media Asset Capital on behalf of TVT Media, has found that 18 languages are available in France across its 567 TV channels – including Arabic, Mandarin, Khmer, Turkish, Armenian, Romani and Tamil. This was more than any other market, though the UK came a close second with 15 languages available across 568 channels - the major languages of India – Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil and Punjabi – account for 62 channels and are the biggest UK broadcast languages other than English, totalling more channels than in Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

The EU alone speaks about 50 odd languages, official and otherwise.

Consider India’s internet subscriber base, which has grown rapidly in recent times to reach close to 500 million subscribers, from 84 million in 2012. India also reportedly consumed 22% of world’s mobile data between April and June 2018, and Indian telcos handle more data traffic than their Chinese and US counterparts, combined, according to the Cellular Operators Association of India. This large and rapidly increasing base of internet users are generating data that can be used to build and fine-tune conversational AI products.

In the weeks after the release of OpenAI’s system, outside researchers applied it to conversation. An independent group of researchers used OpenAI’s technology to create a system that leads a competition to build the best chatbot that was organized by several top labs, including the Facebook AI Lab. And this month, Google “open sourced” its Bert system, so others can apply it to additional tasks. Mr. Devlin and his colleagues have already trained it in 102 languages.
