Automatic Language Interpretation to be Piloted at S. Korea's Winter Olympics

Automatic Language Interpretation to be Piloted at S. Korea's Winter Olympics | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

The "Zero UI" automatic interpretation technology developed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) was approved as the international standard by the International Organization for Standardization in July 2017. ETRI, a Korean non-profit research organization, plans to test drive its language interpretation technology at the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.  Zero UI stands for "zero user interface". In the case of ETRI's automatic interpretation technology, it means that users do not touch their smartphones to begin translation services. Rather, they simply wear a Bluetooth headset and speak into the attached microphone. Their smartphones automatically detect the languages being spoken, then translate and transmit the conversation between participants.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Olympics have been test beds for language tech solutions since the 1960s. Looking forward to what Paris can propose in 2024.

@Sogou Search Engine Working on Lip-reading and Divorce advice | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Lip reading is among the technologies Sogou unveiled at the Wuzhen World Internet Conference. When speakers are directly facing the camera, the system can “read” inaudible speech by analysing lip movements. The technology puts the firm on par with Google’s DeepMind artificial intelligence division.
Sogou is also upgrading its simultaneous interpretation system to add “emotion” to the translated voice output, Wang disclosed.
Sougou’s research on language processing is supported by the largest number of Chinese character inputs and include a daily average of more than 300 million voice entries created by its users, according to the Beijing-based company.

LT-Innovate's insight:

The power of a very large, relatively homogenous population of single-language speakers. Available Chinese-language data may be on a par if not greater than that for very multi-dialectal English.
