Founded by famed MIT researcher Cynthia Breazeal, the robot Jibo successfully raised over $3.5 million in crowdfunding on top of millions from venture capital. Breazeal promised to usher in a new age of social robotics, However, last week a company spokesperson informed BostInno that the robot pioneer is laying off the majority of its workforce, to enable “additional time to secure additional funding or pursue an exit.” Jibo is sadly running on fumes after burning through more than seventy million dollars in three years.

@ULG Awarded 2nd #NMT R&D Grant from Enterprise Ireland

United Language Group (ULG), has been awarded a quarter of a million-dollar grant by Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership Programme to continue the work of its NMT technology R&D in its Galway Office in collaboration with NUI Galway.
The grant will fund R&D on an MT solution that will differentiate ULG from commercial solutions that are not tailored for specific industries or organizations.

SK Telecom will join forces with Hyundai Motor Company, Hanwha Asset Management and Element AI to form a fund that will invest in startups with innovative technology and ideas worldwide. This AI Alliance Fund will be established in the first quarter of next year with an initial investment of US$45 million (KRW 50 billion). The AI Alliance Fund will invest in startups specialized in artificial intelligence, smart mobility and FinTech in Europe, Israel and the United States. The fund will focus on equity investment in emerging startups with the next generation technology and innovative business models.

The fund intends to leverage the research capabilities and the global network of Element AI, an AI solutions provider founded by Yoshua Bengio, a professor of the University of Montreal, when analyzing potential AI investment opportunities.

Alibaba announced it was launching a new research institute dubbed the “Academy for Discovery, Adventure, Momentum, and Outlook” (DAMO), which includes seven new research labs in China, the United States, Russia, Israel, and Singapore.
In addition to the new research academy, Alibaba is also committing US$15 billion to research and development over the next three years – almost doubling its average annual spend. For the company’s 2017 financial year ending in March, the company spent about US$2.6 billion on product development.
