SYSTRAN International (S. Korea) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with HelloTalk, China's leading service provider of foreign language learning and social networking services with more than 8 million users.

SYSTRAN will use a corpus of data from HelloTalk's over 30 million users to build. a Korean MT development and service platform based on the high demand of Korean from HelloTalk users.

It will also provide the engines to HelloTalk for its competitive translation service.

LT-Innovate's insight:

HelloTalk provides crowdsourced data from its social-networking language learning platform, enabling Systran to boost the quality of its (especially) Korean-based neural MT engines. Crowdsourcing L-Learning & Subtitling with Viki

Much of Viki’s Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese programming is subtitled via crowd-sourced translation done by subscribers,. Apart from the subtitling for language translation, users can also put up timed comments, have a chance to pick up the languages. In LEARN mode they can study Chinese, Korean, Japanese, by referring to dual English and foreign-language subtitles, by pausing programs to repeat words, and also searching for words and phrases so they can hear them in different ways, in different languages.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Gig economy in subtitling: you don't get paid but you can learn better the language you translate.
