Combining Speech and Object Recognition ML Could Aid Translation

Combining Speech and Object Recognition ML Could Aid Translation | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

MIT computer scientists have developed a system that learns to identify objects within an image, based on a spoken description of the image. Given an image and an audio caption, the model will highlight in real-time the relevant regions of the image being described. One promising application is learning translations between different languages, without need of a bilingual annotator. Consider a situation where two different-language speakers describe the same image. If the model learns speech signals from language A that correspond to objects in the image, and learns the signals in language B that correspond to those same objects, it could assume those two signals — and matching words — are translations of one another.

Extracting Audio Signals from Visual Information

Extracting Audio Signals from Visual Information | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Researchers at MIT, Microsoft, and Adobe have developed an algorithm that can reconstruct an audio signal by analyzing minute vibrations of objects depicted in video. In one set of experiments, they were able to recover intelligible speech from the vibrations of a potato-chip bag photographed from 15 feet away through soundproof glass.
In other experiments, they extracted useful audio signals from videos of aluminum foil, the surface of a glass of water, and even the leaves of a potted plant. The researchers will present their findings in a paper at this year’s Siggraph, the premier computer graphics conference.

The Hearables Revolution - Speech Translation, etc.

The Hearables Revolution - Speech Translation, etc. | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

Silicon Valley is lining up in-ear computers as the future of how we interface with our digital world, making audio the platform for what we do through our phones. With voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant and Cortana on hand to take commands and issue replies (such as finding a restaurant and directing you to it), the idea we ever used to walk around staring at our phones for this information will seem faintly ridiculous.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Hypothesises that audio/ear-pods will replace text interfaces, including automated spoken translation. The number of audio translation devices suddenly hitting the market (see earlier news items in 2017) in Europe, th US and Asia supports this prediction.

How Augmented Reality Audio Will Let You Soundtrack Your Life

How Augmented Reality Audio Will Let You Soundtrack Your Life | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it
This technology is still young, but powerful solutions already exist today -- and that's not even scratching the surface of other advancements in the world of sound. There have been exciting developments in Internet-of-Things (internet-connected “smart” household devices), artificially intelligent music, and, most importantly, spatial audio, which adds “3D” directionality to sound. These technologies are converging with hearables to further immerse us in a futuristic music fantasy world that's quickly becoming reality.
LT-Innovate's insight:

Informative survey of possible futures for "hearables". Doesn't mention the work done at the BBC on "radio 2.0" listening technology, nor on possible language learning/translation extensions of what is presented here as basically a musical journey.
