Note that the term "Language Technology" is limited here to "translation tech". 25 years ago we used 'Human Language Technology' to refer to the emerging world of artificial Language Intelligence generally - i.e. digital speech, & text,  NLP & NLU, summarisation & search,, translation & transcription etc. 400 tools just for translation activities suggest the need for a rigorous guide to be any use...

The government of Singapore has launched a ‘Translation Talent Development Scheme’, which offers recipients a bond-free subsidy of up to 90% of costs –  capped at SGD 10,000 (USD 7,647) per awardee – for training and courses related to translation, interpretation and language technology. The purpose of this scheme is to encourage local translators and interpreters to upgrade their skills as well as “groom the next generation of translation talents.”

Obviously we need to get over the "humans vs machines" obstacle by training all translators in the technologies of ambient intelligence, AI, etc just as lawyers will have to learn about Legal Tech...

And once again, we envision collaboration as being the key element: At the workflow level, where friction between translator and editor disappears, and at the industry level, where developers iterate and build on top of communal software

Time to Build a Language Data Market? - TAUS

There is naturally much debate about how much data a given neural system needs to build a baseline engine that can drive a translation production line for a given semantic domain. Responses depend on multiple parameters and issues: a lot of data for a baseline, much less than before for a domain-specific? Experimentation is all. But both quality and quantity are key parameters: the real question is, how can the availability of language data in general be optimized to enable better translation?

Microsoft Puts the Power of AI Behind Its Translator Hub

Slator reached out to MS Transaltion Program Manager Chris Wendt to better understand the new AI-enabled customization features of Microsoft Translator. According to their announcement, the new features allow users to create category-trained statistical machine translation systems without the need for a large, existing corpus of previously translated material. Users basically merge what corpus they have with Microsoft’s own, which consists of billions of words, according to Wendt.

Euro Parl Awards €67.5m to 31 Translation Vendors

On 27 and 28 January 2016, the European Parliament released contract awards for translation services with a total value of EUR 67.5m. A full 31 language service providers made the cut. The contracts were tendered out by the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Parliament on behalf of the European Court of Auditors, the Committee of Regions, and the European Economic and Social Committee. Of the 24 official languages in the European Parliament, there were a total of 22 languages represented in this series of contract award notices.
