Combining Speech and Object Recognition ML Could Aid Translation

Combining Speech and Object Recognition ML Could Aid Translation | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

MIT computer scientists have developed a system that learns to identify objects within an image, based on a spoken description of the image. Given an image and an audio caption, the model will highlight in real-time the relevant regions of the image being described. One promising application is learning translations between different languages, without need of a bilingual annotator. Consider a situation where two different-language speakers describe the same image. If the model learns speech signals from language A that correspond to objects in the image, and learns the signals in language B that correspond to those same objects, it could assume those two signals — and matching words — are translations of one another.

Why Human Evaluation is Needed for #NLProc and #NMT Outputs

Why Human Evaluation is Needed for #NLProc and #NMT Outputs | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

In our latest paper (appearing at ACL 2018), The price of debiasing automatic metrics in natural language evaluation, we shed light on both these questions. The TL;DR summary is:
- existing automatic metrics are not just poor indicators of quality but are also biased (thus, at least some human evaluation is necessary) and
- the cost of debiasing these automatic metrics is about the same as conducting a full human evaluation (automatic metrics won't reduce costs, but we don't yet know what will).

Research on Multi-Domain Neural Machine Translation

An approach to neural machine translation (NMT) that supports multiple domains in a single model and allows switching between the domains when translating. The core idea is to treat text domains as distinct languages and use multilingual NMT methods to create multi-domain translation systems,. We show that this approach results in significant translation quality gains over fine-tuning. We also explore whether the knowledge of pre-specified text domains is necessary, turns out that it is after all, but also that when it is not known quite high translation quality can be reached.

What Translators (Don't) Know About AI and #NLP

What Translators (Don't) Know About AI and #NLP | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

When asked to summarise their thoughts on AI and NLP, all translators seemed to agree on one key point — humans can never be fully replaced. There was an apparent split between two groups of people. There are those who see technology as an aid that could speed up the translation process. Meanwhile, many believe that people will begin to accept substandard language quality, and adapt to a new reality in which every piece of content will be translated entirely by machines.

LT-Innovate's insight:

Time to retire the "humans will be replaced" and "people will accept substandard language quality" memes now circulating in the translation industry. Machines and humans will co-exist and mutually adapt as they always have done. Fully automated translation will mostly be used by consumers or for high-volume knowledge access. And quality will always be a moving target.
