@CondeNast Suggests Fast-TRacking #NeuralMT to Boost @EU Digital Single Market

@CondeNast Suggests Fast-TRacking #NeuralMT to Boost @EU Digital Single Market | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it
I suggested the EU makes the fast development of neural machine translation one of their flagship technology projects. Typically these EU projects get funding over €1 billion ($1.31 billion) over the course of 10 years. This is what will unleash the digital single market and lead to a similarly explosive growth of content and information as the internet did itself.

Europe’s Other Half Lives Offline — and That’s Everyone’s Problem

Europe’s Other Half Lives Offline — and That’s Everyone’s Problem | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

For years, Europe largely ignored warnings of a growing digital divide, a continental rift between the well-connected North and the tech-deprived South. Now, that gap threatens to derail the European Union’s tech aspirations, hamper its efforts to become the world’s digital enforcer and potentially worsen the region’s existing economic divisions. But these goals, known collectively as the digital single market, are based on a flawed assumption: That everyone in Europe has the same online habits — and the same access to the internet.

EU’s New Copyright Law Gives Startups Only 3 Years to Use Data Freely

EU’s New Copyright Law Gives Startups Only 3 Years to Use Data Freely | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

The Copyright Reform that’s being discussed by the EU now, could crush certain type of startups when they reach the ripe age of three. “We know from entrepreneurs we spoke to that they would move their business outside of Europe if this law becomes a reality,” Lenard Koschwitz, Director of European Affairs at Allied for Startups, told TNW.
The EU’s upcoming Copyright Reform is hotly debated, but most agree that the law needs to be updated and adapted to the digital age. The reformed law is supposed to ensure the right of copyright holders, ease cross-border access to online content, and improve copyright rules on research, education and cultural heritage.

Europe Parliament Vote on Text and Data Mining Access: Yes to Researchers, Mostly No to Startups

Europe Parliament Vote on Text and Data Mining Access: Yes to Researchers, Mostly No to Startups | Language Tech Market News | Scoop.it

The Parliament’s decision to approve only an “optional exception” for companies “will split the single market,” said Lenard Koschwitz, director of European affairs with Allied for Startups, a lobby group. “Rather than creating legal certainty, the Parliament today opted for fragmentation and a backseat for Europe’s innovators,” he said.
Letting more companies in on largescale computer trawling would lead to innovation in mining tools, Koschwitz argues. Today, only just over one percent of companies are using text mining in Europe, according to data from FutureTDM, an EU-backed project which promotes mining techniques.
Research libraries, meanwhile, said new copyright rules would allow them “to better preserve, digitise and share their collections.”
