In this talk, he shares how his ambitious new project, Duolingo, will help millions learn a new language while translating the Web quickly and accurately -- all for free.

He also invented DuoLingo, which is a language-learning website. 

 

DuoLingo enable people to learn languages for FREE and yet contribute to translate the languages!

Chris Lonsdale gave an interesting talk on "How to learn any language in six months". The video has over 1 MILLION views! 

 

He asserted that TALENT and IMMERSION does not really matter. He gave an interesting metaphor of why immersion in a new country does not help anyone to learn the foreign language by stating that:

 

                "A drowning man can't learn to swim!" 

 

5 PRINCIPLES to learn a new language quick and easy:

 

#1 Focus on language content that is relevant to you

#2 Use your new language as a tool to communicate from Day 1

#3 when you first understand the message, you will unconsciously acquire the language. COMPREHENSION is KEY! 

#4 Language learning is about physiological training

#5  Psychological state matters. Be happy! 

 

7 ACTION to learn a new language quick and easy:

 

#1 Listen a lot

#2 Focus on the MEANING FIRST

#3 Start mixing verbs, nouns, and adjectives = numerous possible phrases

#4 Focus on the core 

#5 Get a language parent 

#6 Copy the face 

#7 Direct connect to mental images

Learning a new language seems like a difficult task especially for homeschoolers.Find out more in the Why Language Learning is Important Infographic.

The infographic portrays not only "why language learning is important", but also "how to study a foreign language" and "challenges in language learning". 

 

It's quite funny but TRUE that language learning is important to find future husband or wife in a wider selection pool.  It is also important if you have a husband and wife from a foreign country. You need to learn their language in order to better understand the culture. 

 

I do think it's beneficial for the children of an interracial marriage. I have a friend who married a Japanese man and now their child can speak Bahasa Malaysia, English, and Japanese!

Learning a second language can have a positive effect on the brain, even if it is taken up in adulthood, a University of Edinburgh study suggests. (Yet another reason to learn a second language (or third, or more)!

Start learning your second language now! After a previous study showed that being bilingual can slows brain ageing, this research found a strong effects of learning a second language on general intelligence and reading. The effects present on learners that learned the second language before 18 years old as well those who learned the language during their adulthood. 

 

However, there are still many questions to be answered such as whether the proficiency or actively speaking the second language will have positive or other effect on ageing, intelligence, and reading.
