The Dangers of Religious Instruction in Public Schools

The Dangers of Religious Instruction in Public Schools | Kristen Parkins | Scoop.it
When I heard the question, “Should we teach religion in public schools?” it made me cringe. Why? The United States is currently in the unenviable position of being near the bottom of the list of industrialized nations when it comes to teaching evolution in our public schools.
Kristen Parkins's insight:

This article is about how we should not have religion in schools. One extremely valid point made is that if we as a community  keep rejecting fact and excepting fable, religion that can scientifically be proven wrong, we as a whole will not be able to compete in the global market and having religion in school is keeping out society in that rut of not moving forward with science. I can use this as one of my personal articles.

Learn more about the separation of church and state.
Kristen Parkins's insight:

this video is about a school that had a banner up in their auditorium. The banner had a prayer on it and was up for over 50 years. One girl came and didn't feel comfortable with the banner being posted in her school. She held a trial against the school. the town was not very happy about what she was doing but she ended up winning the trial and they took the banner down. The banner violated the first amendment about separation from church and state. I will use thi as my first video source.

Kristen Parkins's insight:

This article was pros and cons concerning the topic. It only gave examples of problems that have already occurred concerning the topic. For example Engel v. Vitale (1962). Also "The Case Against School Prayer," 1995. These topics both support the idea of not promoting prayer in schools. This source would be counted as one of my non- biased article. I will use this to mention some of the other side.

First Amendment Schools: The Five Freedoms - Court Case

First Amendment Schools
Kristen Parkins's insight:

This is a court case between Abington School District v. Schempp in 1963. The debate is on whether an official reading at the beginning of each school day of Bible passages, without further comment, violates the Establishment Clause. The conclusion was that state-sponsored devotional Bible readings in public schools constitute an impermissible religious exercise by government. I will use this as article as one of my personal point articles.

Prayer back in public schools?

Debate over Indiana lawmaker's bill
Kristen Parkins's insight:

This video is a priest being interviewed by a local news Chanel giving his views on having prayer in school. He says that he disagrees because in Indianian they are starting the day with a prayer in public schools. He believes that  it is not fair because it is like placing a religion upon children and its pushing a certain dogma. And if we are paying to go to a government school   we should be able to choose the religion we believe in. I will use this as my second video.

God, Allah, Christmas, and Ramadan: Should Any Religion Be Expressed in Public Schools? | PublicSchoolReview.com

God, Allah, Christmas, and Ramadan: Should Any Religion Be Expressed in Public Schools? | PublicSchoolReview.com | Kristen Parkins | Scoop.it
Join the debate igniting in public schools regarding the role of religion in education. Should all religions be incorporated, or should religion be omitted to avoid any potential indoctrination?
Kristen Parkins's insight:

this article talked about both sides of the argument about having prayer in schools. It explained a few incidences that happened such as, a battle arose in the New York City public schools over whether creches should be allowed on school grounds. And a school had a song that said “Allah is God.” that was required to be sung. both of these topics were talked about and debated over with two very strong stances on both ends of the spectrum. This source would be counted as one of my non- biased article.

Pros and Cons of Prayer in School

Pros and Cons of Prayer in School - Study both sides of this heated debate and learn the history behind the controversy. Where did it originate?
Kristen Parkins's insight:

this article was the two sides of the topic of having prayer in school. some key points that would support my stance are -School prayer violates the “separation of church and state.” -Prayer is school is already legal. Students are already allowed to pray on a voluntary basis (in a non-disruptive way) so formal school prayer is unnecessary. -The public school system is created for all students and supported by all taxpayers. It should therefore remain neutral on religious issues over which students and taxpayers will differ. This source would be one of my credible non-biased websites.  I will use this as some of my key points.
