What 2012 Holds for Google

What 2012 Holds for Google | Kol Tregaskes Blog | Scoop.it

"It was a monumental 2011 for Google, with it finally cracking the social media nut, rolling out social search globally, before unfurling the +1 button across the Web and then launching its much-anticipated Facebook-killer Google+. Heck, even the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu started hanging out on Google+. You don’t get any hipper than that.

Google can be pretty satisfied with the way its 2011 went, but we’re not here to look backwards. The Next Web’s Nancy Messieh has already done a pretty stellar job of dissecting the past year for Google, so here we’ll take a look at our virtual crystal ball, and see what could be on the road ahead for Google over the next twelve months."

The 9 Most Disappointing Games of 2011

The 9 Most Disappointing Games of 2011 | Kol Tregaskes Blog | Scoop.it

"In 2011, the new millennium entered its awkward tween years, and so did gaming. The videogame industry grew like a weed, although some of its rapid developments were of the squeaky-voice and facial acne variety.

The editors of Wired magazine, Wired.com and Ars Technica have joined forces to bring you this year’s list of gaming disappointments. This should not be considered a list of the worst games of the year, as we assiduously strove to not actually play those.

No, the following are the games that we let ourselves get at least somewhat excited about — even putting some on our Most Anticipated Games of 2011 list earlier this year — that just ended up letting us down."

UK Album Download Sales Grow by 26.6%

UK Album Download Sales Grow by 26.6% | Kol Tregaskes Blog | Scoop.it
"Sales of digital download albums and singles saw solid growth in the UK during 2011 but failed to stave off an overall decline in the market, new figures from industry body the BPI reveal today.

During the year, UK sales of digital albums grew by 26.6% to 26.6 million, and 15 albums sold more than 100,000 digital copies. However, CD album sales declined 12.6% year-on-year to 86.2m, and combined sales of digital and physical albums saw an overall drop of 5.6%, to 113.2m.

Digital sales aren’t proving enough to create overall growth, as CDs are still by far the preferred way of buying music in the UK. CDs accounted for 76.1% of total sales, while downloads took a 23.5% market share and vinyl clung on with just 0.3%."

The portable phone-charger that soaks up data and free sunshine (Wired UK)

The portable phone-charger that soaks up data and free sunshine (Wired UK) | Kol Tregaskes Blog | Scoop.it

"Berlin-based start-up Changers is taking action against climate change -- and they're starting with phone charging. "If everyone contributes a little, we can alter behaviour," says Hans Raffauf of Changers. The company has developed a solar-powered phone charger that measures energy production and shares the data with others.

The $149 (£93) Changers starter kit contains the "Maroshi" A4-size solar panel, and the "Kalhuh-fummi" lithium-ion battery unit. It charges up in four hours of sunlight, measuring each Watt-hour of energy produced and gram of CO2 saved. The data can be uploaded to the Changers site and compared with that of other users. Need a further incentive? Every green Watt-hour earns you a credit or discount voucher for partnering businesses.

Beta-testing of the device started in California last autumn; Europe will begin testing early this year."

Backup Your Social Media Accounts For Free With Backupify

Backup Your Social Media Accounts For Free With Backupify | Kol Tregaskes Blog | Scoop.it

Imagine one fine day Facebook or Twitter suspends your account. You apply for reactivation and then wait until the account is restored, but there is a good chance of your account never seeing the light of the day leaving you with no option but to open a fresh account and start all over again.

Social media plays a dominant role in our lives and it is estimated that 22 percent of all time online, or one in every four and half minutes is spent on a social network. Shutting down a Twitter or a Facebook account literally erases one’s online identity along with the data has been shared with friends over the years...

Want to Follow my Google+ Posts by Topic? Use This Links | Kol Tregaskes Blog | Scoop.it

"I've just updated all the links on my About page and added a useful table of contents. The TOC is basically a copy of the sections from my #Currents edition here: http://bit.ly/kolcurrents (this has also been updated today though I still need to fix the logo)

You'll see that they are +Google+ search pages. They are filtering on/off a load of hashtags (which you see at the bottom of virtually all my posts for the last several months). These hashtags have now become extremely useful, for the TOC as well as for #Currents. They have turned into my categories. So if you only want to follow the tech posts I share then click on the Tech link below and save the search. Easy as that. Just regular check the search and you'll get all my tech-related posts.

Here's the full list (had to use bit.ly links as the the original links are lines and lines long, some users might find these don't work on their browser so just shout and I'll post the full links)"...

5 Things Missing From the New TweetDeck for Chrome

5 Things Missing From the New TweetDeck for Chrome | Kol Tregaskes Blog | Scoop.it

"I like to install as few things on my PC as possible. That’s why when TweetDeck released an app for Google Chrome in Dec. 2010, it was an epiphany.

No need to run another program in the background. Simply flick open a new browser tab and bam: Your Twitter columns are there in all their HTML5 glory.

Then, in May 2011, Twitter acquired TweetDeck. “That’s cool,” we thought. “Who better to manage a Twitter app than Twitter itself?”

For a while, things were fine. Small tweaks and improvements were welcome surprises.

Then, New Twitter emerged, and with it, a brand new version of “ChromeDeck.” Cosmetically, it’s got a bit more snazz. But the more I use it, the more I find it lacking under the hood. Existing features I had grown to rely on in the previous version are nowhere to be found.

Why, Twitter? Why?"
