The Mission Goes On

The Mission Goes On | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

The Mission Goes On is an interactive tool we are developing that takes content - in this case related to the Ozone Layer - and places it geographically on an interactive map. The tool is still in beta, but we are excited about its potential for allowing the collection and distribution of subject specific content outside of the usual "library" or purely chronological approach. It takes selected content curated from one of our existing toolboxes and by feeding it into a map, allows for the creation of a "content story".

The downfall of PDFs and what it says about Knowledge Management

The downfall of PDFs and what it says about Knowledge Management | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

A great article from the Washington post, titled "The solutions to all our problems may be buried in PDFs that nobody reads", cites a World Bank report and emphasizes on its knowledge management issues.

About 13 percent of policy reports were downloaded at least 250 times while more than 31 percent of policy reports are never downloaded. Almost 87 percent of policy reports were never cited.

Great to see the World Bank making these figures public. I did once an analysis for a large organization on their distribution of printed publications. It turned out that only 1/3 of printed publications were delivered and the rest were kept in storage.

Five Steps to Create a Culture of Knowledge Sharing

Five Steps to Create a Culture of Knowledge Sharing | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

Diane Berry of Coveo argues that sharing information is key to the success of any data-driven organization and lists steps to break down data silos.

The old adage that “Knowledge is Power” needs to become “Sharing is Power.” When employees openly share their knowledge, the entire organization becomes more powerful.

Sharing takes many forms, from verbal or digital conversation, to explicitly sending information, to simply providing access to information created by others. As a result of sharing, more information and knowledge will be created and much more will be reused; this leads to better and more informed decisions, better business agility, and radically greater value creation.

6 ways to rethink corporate knowledge sharing

The quest to effectively share knowledge within a company is one that still appears elusive. How do you keep on top of your competitors’ developments? How do you monitor articles that mention your brand? How do you make sure your teams get the information they need to make decisions and to learn?

While we never had more ways to disseminate intelligence and knowledge within companies, it's easy to feel overwhelmed so that we're still often perceiving a lack of communication in the corporate world.

Curation in Learning

Curation in Learning | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

We can think of digital curation as being useful to us in four broad roles that I’m calling Inspiration, Aggregation, Integration and Application. Inspiration is how I term curation that is done by other people on your behalf, outside of a formal learning environment.

Aggregation is the same thing, but done within a formal learning context.  Integration is a more personal curation process; how individuals blend new learning experiences with existing thoughts.  And finally Application is how individuals apply new insights in the real world; how we individually manage knowledge on a day-to-day basis.

Kenya: What Influences the Transition to Knowledge-Based Economy?

When the Kenya Vision 2030 was launched five years ago, it articulated the country's strategic intent by painting a future scenario characterised by prosperity and sustained growth. The kind of socio-economic growth envisaged was premised on a number of crucial suppositions, prominent among which was the gradual transition into a knowledge-based economy.

Broadly, a knowledge-based economy is one which is exemplified by the rampant creation, diffusion and use of knowledge. The extent to which this is realised is generally based on the application of research, science, and technology, but also on the policies, institutions, and systems that have implications for the country's productivity and competitiveness as they affect the overall business climate.

The Future of Knowledge Management and Access | Wired.com

The Future of Knowledge Management and Access | Wired.com | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

Why are organizations not able to be both efficient and effective?

They cannot harness the multitude of information that’s available to them to help them know their customers and the solutions to their challenges. Information is housed in multiple internal and external systems, and it is growing exponentially.

Companies have piles of information within multiple channels, locked away in silos – different systems, different departments, different geographies and different data types, making it impossible to connect the dots and make sense of critical customer information.

Quick Guide to Knowledge Management Tool Selection

Quick Guide to Knowledge Management Tool Selection | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

Knowledge Management can be many things – from simple useable checklists to complex context-sensitive and case-based toolsets.

Some of the most effective knowledge solutions can be very basic, like lists of contact details, account numbers or simple spreadsheets.

The key to success is in getting people to use these sources and continuing to use them (and find them useful). Good practical design is key to building tools that provide information and knowledge quickly, intuitively and appropriately – and that are regularly and continuously used.

toolbox's insight:

This is the introductory article in an upcoming series - looking forward to seeing the next installment where the author - Barclay Raes - will move into a discussion of specific tools.

How Knowledge Management Strategies Can Benefit All Companies

How Knowledge Management Strategies Can Benefit All Companies | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

Even companies that do not, at first glance, appear to have a great deal of knowledge to manage often suffer inefficiencies from pervasive knowledge mismanagement. One obvious example is training material, or rather, the pervasive lack thereof. Many organizations have accumulated a complex labyrinth of procedures over the course of years or decades. New employees can easily be overwhelmed by these byzantine processes, and training materials are often insufficient, out-of-date, or simply non-existent.

OHCHR Knowledge Sharing Online Toolkit

OHCHR Knowledge Sharing Online Toolkit | The Knowledge Management ToolBox | Scoop.it

OHCHR initiated in collaboration with ITC-ILO a coordinated knowledge management approach with the goal of making OHCHR work more effective in the fulfillment of its mandate.

Based on a KM needs assessment and a review of KM approaches and practices of UN agencies ITC-ILO developed a knowledge sharing toolkit which includes methods and techniques to enhance knowledge sharing within OHCHR and through OHCHR activities.

toolbox's insight:

Just came across this - excellent interactive guide & resource to online knowledge sharing. The focus is on UN Agencies, but the information presented is appropriate to many fields of interest.

I particularly like how they have used Articulate Presenter & other Articulate tools to "package" the information.
