Sometimes it’s not enough to give poor countries lots of foreign aid, study finds

Sometimes it’s not enough to give poor countries lots of foreign aid, study finds | Development Co-operation Report | Scoop.it
Foreign aid has a "value for money" problem.
OECDdev's insight:

The United States, a country that spent an enormous $207 billion on development assistance between 2004 and 2011, according to AidData's research, didn't quite get the returns that could be expected. At the very bottom of the list are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. This is notable as these three nations are not members of the DAC of the OECD.

Will China's $2 billion in UN aid buy international respect?

Will China's $2 billion in UN aid buy international respect? | Development Co-operation Report | Scoop.it
From Yahoo News: After years of accusations that Beijing spends more of its secretive foreign aid budget on buying access to raw materials than on helping poor people, the Chinese government appears to be edging towards a new approach that's more in line with other wealthy nations. Chinese President Xi Jinping made a splash at the United Nations two weeks ago when he announced a $2 billion fund to help the world’s poorest countries that could grow to $12 billion dollars by 2030.
OECDdev's insight:

“China is moving towards the standards of the OECD,” says Sun Yun, an expert on Chinese aid policy at the Stimson Institute in Washington. “We are seeing more cooperation between China and OECD countries in development projects in Africa and the Pacific,” Ms. Sun adds

| Development Co-operation Report | Scoop.it
