Witu Attack: Victims first shot, then tied and hacked to death

Witu Attack: Victims first shot, then tied and hacked to death | The circus that is Kenyan politics | Scoop.it

On Monday night, the attackers in Kakathe village, Pandanguo, Moa sub-location, Witu, about 40km from Mpeketoni, left a chilling message that they would return to the area, "until our mission is accomplished".

Barely a week after the Mpeketoni attacks that claimed over 60 lives, fresh attacks have left five people dead.

Witness accounts of what happened differ on the nature of the attacks, with some claiming that the men, who spoke in Somali and Swahili, and were not masked, wanted kafirs (infidels, non-believers) out of the region, while another version pinned the attacks to the controversial land issue.

Andrew Wanjala, a 28-year-old farmer in the area, in a horrifying narration of what happened during the attack that lasted for at least two hours, said the attackers handpicked non-Muslims from the village.

"They came at around 9pm, and started firing in the air, shouting that kafirs must leave this area and further bragged that they were responsible for the recent Mpeketoni attacks. We had hidden some 50 metres from where they were and could not move," said Wanjala.

The witness added that the group of about 10 divided themselves into three, with one set of raiders torching houses, another terrorizing the victims while the rest went round knocking on doors and forcing people out of their houses.

Wanjala said the attackers shot their victims first, made sure they bled, before tying them up and making them lie on the ground facing downwards.

"And then they slaughtered them."

"They were butchered mercilessly. They were cut on the necks as the next victims watched. To make matters worse, the attackers said they are not leaving this area until they eliminate all non-believers," he added.
