MOOCs, disruptive innovation and the future of higher education: A conceptual analysis: Innovations in Education and Teaching International: Vol 0, No 0

Abstract
The potential influence of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on higher education institutions is much discussed and debated, with some arguing that MOOCs are a disruptive innovation that will radically change existing models of higher education. However, analyses of whether and how MOOCs might disrupt higher education models are relatively scarce. This paper analyses whether MOOCs should be considered a disruptive innovation according to the concept’s defining criteria. It compares characteristics of disruptive innovation with current developments in MOOCs, suggesting three perspectives – performance, benefits, and market – that can be used as a lens and analytic framework to explore and evaluate current practice. The findings indicate that MOOCs do not match all the characteristics of disruptive innovation as they are commonly identified in the literature. However, MOOCs may be a sustaining innovation that establishes new markets for learners who are not served by universities.

Rosemary Tyrrell, Ed.D.'s curator insight, February 21, 1:22 PM
We are finding it challenging when students use third-party resources instead of our curriculum. The problem is students don't always select the best learning resources.

Sharon Berman's curator insight, March 19, 5:21 PM
Gen Z are the first generation to have had access to digital technology from the outset of their lives.  It makes sense that they turn to technology first then for all aspects of their lives.

The challenge is making sure the coaches and mentors are providing the support these young people need.

Are they rushing to grow up, by-passing a more formal type of education, and spending time with their peers?

Although we need disruption in the current education system, these ideas are possibly too disruptive to be implemented en masse.

Using Robotics to prepare students for the future

Using Robotics to prepare students for the future | Keep learning | Scoop.it

In today’s’ technology-driven world, it’s important now more than ever to prepare students for the future. Teaching robotics to young students throughout their schooling can increase their ability to be creative and innovative thinkers and more productive members of society. Many governments have already recognized the importance of robotics in the classroom and have begun to create programs and laws that would incorporate it into their public education system. By teaching our students the basics of robotics, we can open a whole new world to them and exciting opportunities that they wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

Vocal Recall - Attach Audio to QR Codes

Vocal Recall - Attach Audio to QR Codes | Keep learning | Scoop.it

Vocal Recall uses QR codes to store a link to your audio feedback in a fully end to end encrypted manner. The codes can then be attached via sticky labels directly to a student’s work and the student can retrieve the feedback using an QR reader. This process saves time, is easily evidenced, allows for greater depth of feedback and engages students with a personal touch. In all trials students have much preferred this form of feedback stating that it is easier to understand and learn from their mistakes in a way that a short, written comment cannot achieve.

Comment utiliser Padlet dans votre classe? Quelles sont les meilleures idées de séance d’apprentissage avec Padlet ? Comment pouvez-vous utiliser Padlet en classe élémentaire et au lycée ?
Claude Tran's curator insight, September 9, 2017 11:14 AM

The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality

The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality | Keep learning | Scoop.it
While AR isn’t difficult or expensive to use (especially when compared to 3D Printing or Maker Spaces), it does require forethought and planning. You’ll need a smartphone or tablet with a back facing camera, an augmented reality app (many free), a trigger image (you create yourself, probably for free), and an Internet connection. Then, scan the trigger image with a mobile device app and see what happens!

Although AR isn't one of my favorite uses of technology in the classroom, I do think that it can be educational if used on occasion or as a one-off activity. Kids will certainly be amazed at what they see and you can build on that initial engagement to create real authentic tasks.
