Just How Far Is the Nearest Star to Earth Other Than Our Sun
If we wanted to travel from Earth to the nearest Solar System Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf star located at a distance of 4.2 light-years away. A light year is the distance light travels in a single year – 9,460,528,000,000 kilometers. So the light we see coming from Proxima Centauri left the star 4.2 years ago. Even being the nearest star, Proxima Centauri is incredibly far away. It would take our fastest spacecraft more than 50,000 years to make the journey.
