What Can a Homicide Detective Teach Kids?

What Can a Homicide Detective Teach Kids? | Junior Police Academy | Scoop.it

AUSTIN, TX How do you inspire a young person to cultivate their mind with logic, and conduct their affairs accordingly? Today’s good character trait of the day (DISCERNMENT) addressed this challenge head on.

Students enrolled in Murchison Middle School’s Junior Police Academy gained insight into how they should go about sifting information from a real expert in “discernment” – homicide detective David Fugitt of the Austin Police Department.

As a detective in the Austin homicide unit, Fugitt is also responsible for investigating suicides and suspicious and accidental deaths. In 2010, he was the lead investigator when Andrew Joseph Stack flew a single-engine plane into a Northwest Austin office.

Fugitt was the latest member of the law enforcement community to lend their insights into good character as part of a new course in character building called “American Police Officer”, sponsor by the Junior Police Academy, a nationwide youth program celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Each day of class focuses on a specific good character trait. The course examines good character through the eyes of American law enforcement – where only extreme character can meet the challenges of public safety.

“To truly inspire good character, you have to put kids in the room with it,” said Phillip LeConte, JPA Executive Director. “Over the past twenty years, the Junior Police Academy has been doing just that – proactively bringing young people into proximity with law enforcement professionals. Bomb Squad, CSI, SWAT, Patrol Officer, FBI Special Agent – each is an opportunity for young people to witness good character tested under extreme conditions.”

“This program taps into a powerful source of inspiration,” said Kelly LeConte, JPA Program Director, “reframing how a young person experiences their own community. While seldom appreciated, acts of good character shape their home, school and community.”
