Kan. board to revise teacher licensing rules | Wichita Eagle

Kan. board to revise teacher licensing rules | Wichita Eagle | Junction City Education Association | Scoop.it
The State Board of Education voted Tuesday to require certain Kansas educators renewing their teaching licenses to submit fingerprints for checks against a state criminal database in effort to better screen classrooms for convicted felons.
Cathy Rankin's insight:

If your original Kansas teaching license was issued prior to 2002, this may apply to you.  When you renew again, you will be required to submit fingerprints for a background check.

Cathy Rankin's insight:

Welcome back!!!  You will see materials from us over the next couple weeks as we gear up for the new year.  One thing in particular that you will see is a magazine subscription card.  Wait before your toss it!! There are about 40 magazines in there that you can receive a subscription to absolutely free---not like those discount clearing houses.  So if you see one that you want for home or your classroom, here is a way to get it.  If you don't see anything you like, please speak to the librarians to see if you can order a subscription in your name for your school or public library.

Cathy Rankin's insight:

This year we have a number of committees that will work with the district to resolve issues that we could not satifactorily address in negotiations.  A few of these are a new salary schedule, determining an elementary teaching load, school start times, and student contact minutes at the middle school.  These are in addition to our regular operating committees.

Many of these committees will benefit from expertise that is not currently on our board, but professionals like you can provide.

We developed a survey for you to express your interest in these committees.  We have stated the objective of the committee, the issue that exists, the number of positions available, and an approximation of time involved. If you have any additional questions about any of the committees, feel free to contact any member of the Board of Directors.

Cathy Rankin's insight:

In addition to the Access Card, members have the NEA member benefits site.  I always thought that I never purchased anything worth using this for, but after attending a workshop this summer, I thought that I would give it a try.  I already have the auto and homeowners insurance that saved me over $500 a year.  This summer on stuff I normally buy, I saved an additional $450.00.  I will have a PowerPoint on our webpage in the next couple weeks that shows what I did.  In the meantime, I will shop through the Click & Save much more often!

Cathy Rankin's insight:

I never remember to print coupons, but this app allows you to claim yourAccess card benefits right from your phone.  All you do is put in your Access card number (which is larger than the spaces that they give with xxxx-xxx, but don't let that confuse you) when you sign up.  I didn't even have to ask my grandchildren to do it for me!

Teacher Punished for Telling Students About Constitutional Rights as a review for school-mandated survey

Teacher Punished for Telling Students About Constitutional Rights as a review for school-mandated survey | Junction City Education Association | Scoop.it
By Todd Starnes

An Illinois high school teacher was punished by a local school district after he warned students about the Constitutional rights before answering a school-mandated survey about emotional and at-risk behavior.

Cathy Rankin's insight:

It appears that this teacher had a teachable moment to apply information from a recent Bill of Rights unit in a relevant context. There is no mention of any education association in any of the articles I read, but this is one of many possible scenarios that the JCEA with the KNEA attorneys would assist to defend our members.
