Mitchell L Gold's curator insight, December 7, 2013 5:27 PM

the doctor of SIr John A Macdonald was the son of the Chief of the FIrst Nations, Mississauga of the New Credit. This man, Peter Edmund Jones was the first graduated doctor of the Indigenous community.  His chosen role was to be political advisor to Sir John A and this role has been kept quite a secret.  My insight is to develop a full perspective of what happened, when, how, and why - in looking at the development of the country we know as Canada.  This course will learn and teach about the possibilities of social change through using education.

Demonstrate the ability to interpret, recognize, appreciate, and understand information presented through visible actions, objects and symbols, natural or man-made

Peter Evans's curator insight, November 26, 2013 8:47 AM

I'd suggest a lot of the more innovative university programmes are already doing much of what is suggested here. One thing to emphasise is supporting students to use digital tools specifically for learning as they generally already know how to use these tools. In otherwords, while students may often be digitally competent, they are often less digitally literate in terms of learning processes. Also, what refer to PDAs - surely old tech?

Miep Carstensen's curator insight, December 1, 2013 11:14 PM

Sound advice for teachers to incorprate these core competencies in their teaching programmes.

This $200 Google Glass competitor looks like ordinary glasses -- and can hold prescription lenses | VentureBeat.com | joy and study | Scoop.it

A tiny unfunded five-person startup in Massachusetts has created a Google Glass alternative that, they say, is much more immersive than Glass — and much less geeky.

The product is a set of smart glasses — “smartspecks” — that can give you heads-up directions, take pictures, record videos, display on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram updates from your friends, and more. Just like Google Glass, connectivity to the cloud is via your phone. Unlike Google Glass, however, all the intelligence resides in an app on that phone.

“We designed the simplest most minimalist device that we could,” LaForge Optical CEO Corey Mack told VentureBeat. “Anyone who wants Google Glass … in a more conventional form factor can have it. Additionally our lens technology allows for people who need prescription lenses (about 65 percent of the population) to be able to use our glasses.”

The upshot, he says, is that LaForge Optical delivers 80 percent of what people want from a pair of smart glasses — with 20 percent of the complication.

The 21st century is challenging old notions of learning spaces

The 21st century is challenging old notions of learning spaces | joy and study | Scoop.it

Classrooms should be spaces that students don’t want to leave.  Some communities are still hesitant about these futuristic looking learning spaces and have resorted to older, traditional physical spaces. Hopefully, they will begin to embrace changes to better prepare students and move them in the 21st century global economy.

While I do not ascribe to everything mentioned in this post, there is much to commend it.

Schools and the learning spaces within them should be engaging and attractive places for children in which to learn. Outside of their home, school is where they spend a significant portion of their lives.
