Stem Cell Approaches: To Treat Diabetes

Stem Cell Approaches: To Treat Diabetes | Journal of Stem Cell Research & Therapy | Scoop.it

Stem cells are used in the treatment for various diseases, as they show regenerative property. Diabetes is a chronic disease caused due to high levels of glucose in the body. Insulin is a hormone produced by pancreas, which controls the level of sugar in the body. Diabetes is caused due to low production of insulin, resistance shown towards insulin, or can be caused by both.

Research is now being conducted to use stem cells for treatment of diabetes. Researchers were using embryonic stem cells for treatment. Pluripotency and the ability to differentiate are the properties of embryonic stem cells, which make them to be used for several treatments. Researchers managed to convert human embryonic stem cells to insulin producing cells; as a result, the deficiency of insulin can be recovered.

Currently the patient has to wait for organ to get transplanted in curing the disease. Even when the organ is available, it may be contaminated. So, if embryonic stem cells were used, there is no risk of contamination and also they divide to form more number of cells of similar type, and cells can be kept as stock to be used, whenever a new patient is available. Human embryonic stem cells which are used for the treatment were isolated from the human embryos.

Researchers were searching many ways to develop stem cells into insulin producing cells, but the processes failed in case of diabetes, due to destruction of cells by patient’s own immune system. Currently, the treatment in use includes injecting patients with islet cells, which produce insulin. These cells are harvested from cadavers. The researchers were finding new ways to treat diabetes using stem cells.

Stem Cell Transplants: Alternative method to Treat Leukemia

Stem Cell Transplants: Alternative method to Treat Leukemia | Journal of Stem Cell Research & Therapy | Scoop.it

Leukemia causes an abnormal increase of immature white blood cells in the body. It causes a group of diseases affecting the blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid system. The treatment for leukemia depends on: type of leukemia (acute or chronic) caused, age of the individual and presence of leukemia cells incerebrospinal fluid. It also depends on certain features of the leukemia cells.

Stem cell transplants in patients with chronic leukemia can be curable. The patient’s bone marrow stem cells are replaced with those of a healthy individual. The leukocytes of the infected person are killed by using other techniques like chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
