The road to religious freedom in Russia | 9news.com

The road to religious freedom in Russia | 9news.com | Jordan Glass - first amendment religion | Scoop.it
Jordan Hailey Glass's insight:
Most Russians are Orthodox Christians, a smaller percentage of other faiths exist there as well. Although, religion in Russia through the Soviet union was outlawed. During this time the deeply religious people of Russia could not live their faith. The United states is required to execute a world wide survey of religious freedom and report on it, and through foreign affairs encourage it.

USCIRF - USCIRF | Jordan Glass - first amendment religion | Scoop.it
USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan federal body that monitors violations of religious freedom abroad and makes recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State and Congress.
Jordan Hailey Glass's insight:

This website explains the division of government that regulates religious freedom. It describes this right as a vital component of American government. It allows each individual to believe what s/he desires to, without such right we could be considered tyrinnical. In summary there is no such mandated religion. There is a religion that takes up the majority but it is not supposed to effect government decisions.

Religious Freedom

Religious Freedom | Jordan Glass - first amendment religion | Scoop.it
Jordan Hailey Glass's insight:

This amendment is a core objective of the U.S foreign policy. The government monitors religious persecution and discrimination across the world. Our government encourages religious freedom to be a source of stability for all countries. Religious freedom is guarenteed as an inalienable humanistic right. This right is part of the first amendment, amongst freedom of speech, assembly and press. The office carries out this mission through international reports, secretary of state, ambassadors, etc.

Patriarch: Work with Muslims to promote religious freedom

Patriarch: Work with Muslims to promote religious freedom | Jordan Glass - first amendment religion | Scoop.it
Jordan Hailey Glass's insight:

“The majority Muslim population is good and not violent,” said Archbishop Louis Raphael I Sako, the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Babylon. “They do not agree with the extremists but they are also afraid to react publicly.” many people in america and other countries target people of this religion and describe them as terrorists. Some even go so far as to say "oh people with long hair, beards an middle east accents will blow you up" and much to their ignorance these are usually peaceful people whom are very seperated from the extremists. A lot of the time people try to make fun of or telling people they cant practice that religion when in reality, they can practice whatever they desire about nobody can say anything about it. This archbiship is working with muslims to change the look of who they are to the world.

Which matters more religious freedom or sexual freedom?

Battle over Employment Non-discrimination Act
Jordan Hailey Glass's insight:

In this video from fox news they argue that religious employers religious rights are infringed upon when they can't discriminate against LGBT employee's. Although I don't recall that hiring a person of a different sexual orientation means that you have to change yours. Working amongst a member of the LGBT community isn't a sin, neither will it make you sin, unless you're nervous about that. As far as I, and many other intelligent individuals are concerned sexual freedom and religious freedom are two completely different things. Hiring a gay man will not force you to change your religion, you can keep your religion whilst still respecting the sexual orientation of others.

First Amendment | LII / Legal Information Institute

Jordan Hailey Glass's insight:

This is an article from Cornell University, the second paragraph touches on the topic of ¨seperation of church and state¨ which plays a big part in religious freedom. The government cannot base laws off of any religion (or church). There are so many different religions that make up America that basing a law off of one would infringe on the rights of all other religions. This prohibits the government from establishing an official religion or letting one have more power than the other.
