The Stories We Tell And The Ones We Don’t - Combustus

The Stories We Tell And The Ones We Don’t - Combustus | Jonna Ivin | Scoop.it
I write selfishly. I comfort myself with my own words so that I don’t have to wait for someone else to ask me how I am feeling or what I am thinking. I don’t write so that after I am gone, people will remember me.

Jonna Ivin's insight:

Like any doting aunt, I love my nieces. In my eyes they are perfect. If they have flaws of character, make poor decisions, or do wrong, it is not for me to see. That is the job of their parents. My job is to love them blindly. And I do. I can’t help myself. Not having children of my own, these girls are the light of my life. So when someone says to me, “Oh, so they’re not your real nieces,” after I’ve explained our unique family tree, it’s like shoving a dagger in my heart.

The Heart and Craft of Life Writing

The Heart and Craft of Life Writing | Jonna Ivin | Scoop.it

When I was first asked to write about my experience in self-publishing, the thing that kept running through my mind was, “I have nothing to add on this topic that hasn’t already been written about. Knowing this going in I decided to do what I always do when faced with a new challenge, write from my own experience and write the truth. The truth is, when I finished writing my memoir Will Love For Crumbs, I didn’t have the first clue what to do with it. I knew one thing for sure, I had no desire to write letters to publishers, wait to be told I could submit a few chapters then wait some more, maybe be told I had been accepted and then spend more and more time waiting for my book to finally be released. Of course I knew all along this process that the possibility of rejection would hang over my head. But rejection was not an option for me. That was the second thing I knew for sure.

I figured the best way to avoid being rejected was to not ask to be accepted because If I didn’t ask permission then no one could tell me no....

Dear MsBehaved: Jonna Ivin Answers It For You July 11, 2012 By Jonna Ivin Leave a Comment

Dear Ms. Behaved,

I’ve been dating my boyfriend “Mike” for almost a year now and things are going very well. We’re a year apart- I’m 21 and he’s 22.   This is so embarrassing!  Here goes…  Lately,  he’s brought up wanting to try anal sex several times. I’m not against it (not totally for it either), but something else is bothering me.  My guy’s best, lifelong fiend “Rick” is openly gay and came home from college out of state for the summer. He’s been hanging out with us a lot. I like Rick and enjoy his company, but my boyfriend never mentioned wanting to try anal before Rick came home.

Do you think my boyfriend is homosexual? I’m afraid he wants to have anal sex with me as an experiment to see if he prefers sex with men.  What do I do? Should I just do it to appease him? I am worried that if I don’t, he will seek out anal with a guy.  I’m so confused about what this means. Please help!

Signed,
Booty Called

Dear Ms. Behaved: Jonna Ivin Answers It For You | Jonna Ivin | Scoop.it

Dear Moving Forward,

I think it’s an excellent idea to railroad your boyfriend into marrying you while simultaneously distancing him from his sister. Right after you do that, you can chop off his balls and wear them as earrings at your wedding. Are you out of your ever-loving mind? Slow down!

Thoughts From the Dan O'Brien Project: Interview With Jonna Ivin

Thoughts From the Dan O'Brien Project: Interview With Jonna Ivin | Jonna Ivin | Scoop.it

Me: Do you have words of wisdom about writing that you want to pass on to novelists and writers out there who are starting out?

Jonna: Have fun! If you want to write then write. If you want to publish then publish. If you find that you are filled with angst and banging your head against the wall, then stop doing it. Don’t take yourself so seriously. The single greatest piece of advice I ever received was from a well-known actress I highly respected. I was fretting over some project I was working on and she patiently waited for me to stop complaining then said, “Jonna, you’re not that important. Other people aren't walking around thinking about you and your life; they are too busy thinking about themselves.” I realized she was right. No one cared if I stayed up nights crying and cursing the blank page on my computer. No one cared if I moped around feeling sorry for myself. I have one life and whether or not I enjoy it is entirely up to me. I love writing so I write and if it brings you joy so should you.

The first time I suffered real heartbreak it wasn’t at the hands of the cutest boy on the playground.
