Learning about Learning » Who’s Afraid of Assimilation?

Learning about Learning » Who’s Afraid of Assimilation? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

In Jewish education and policy circles, the typical attitude to assimilation is clear: it’s a bad thing. In fact, it’s often taken to be the thing that Jewish education is supposed to help us avoid. In other words, the assumption is that educating Jewish students “Jewishly” (setting aside what that might mean, for the moment) is counter-assimilatory.

MOFET JTEC - MOOCs and Jewish Studies: A Match Made in Digital Heaven

MOFET JTEC - MOOCs and Jewish Studies: A Match Made in Digital Heaven | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
People usually have puzzled reactions when I tell them that I’ve produced a MOOC on the Talmud. This term, it seems, is not that widely known. Juxtaposing “MOOC” with Talmud leads to the assumption that I’ve referred to some Hebrew or Aramaic concept. Typically, I follow my statement that I’ve produced a MOOC on the Talmud with a little Rashi-style commentary: “MOOC,” I’ll say, “stands for Massive Open Online Course.”

הוראת השואה במסגרת למידה משמעותית - עיתון מקוון - חינוך והוראה מתוקשבת - יד ושם | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

MOFET JTEC - Emory's Holocaust Denial on Trial Website Redesigned and Relaunched

MOFET JTEC - Emory's Holocaust Denial on Trial Website Redesigned and Relaunched | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

Holocaust Denial on Trial, a website founded by Emory University professor Deborah Lipstadt to refute the misleading claims of Holocaust deniers, has been redesigned and relaunched. Created in 2005 through a partnership between Emory and the university’s Tam Institute for Jewish Studies, the website catalogues the legal and evidentiary material arising from David Irving v. Penguin UK and Deborah Lipstadt, a libel claim brought against Lipstadt and her publisher in 1996 by Holocaust denier Irving. Materials from the 32-day trial were posted on the Holocaust Denial on Trial (HDOT) website to provide perpetual access for scholars and the interested public and quality resources to combat Holocaust denial. The website’s redesign and relaunch are timed to coincide with release of the movie “Denial,” a feature film based on Lipstadt’s experiences during the case, which she chronicled in her 2005 book, “History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier”.

MOFET JTEC - A Culture of Israel Education

MOFET JTEC - A Culture of Israel Education | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

Israel education is rooted in a cultural approach, which focuses on the role of social contexts and dynamics in education. Immersive environments are settings, which can influence attitudes by virtue of their synergistic nature. Connectedness refers to social linkages created by social networks. Virtual communities offer opportunities for enhancing an immersive approach to Israel education. The Israel experience is a significantly new Jewish educational framework. As in all education, the educator is a seminal force in the realization of the educational vision. This chapter focuses on the creation of a socio-cultural framework for Israel education. We examine several ideas about culture and context as threads which when woven together form the tapestry that we call “a culture of Israel education”.
