Unlike online courses, remote or distance learning means that students fully participate in the classroom in real time.

You know Sydney Taylor. Author of the All-of-a-Kind Family books, goddess, namesake of the Association of Jewish Libraries’ awards for books for kids and teenagers that “exemplify high literary standards while authentically portraying the Jewish experience.” I am way more excited about these awards than about the farshtunkiner Golden Globes. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the awards, for bonus excitement.

80 years after being banned by Nazis, Bnei Akiva is back in Germany — sort of | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Almost eight decades after being outlawed by the Nazis, Germany’s branch of the international Bnei Akiva movement is back — with some slight changes.

Founded as a religious Zionist movement to promote Jewish immigration to Israel, this particular branch of the organization has shifted its sights to instead suit the needs of the growing local community and the peculiarities of German Jewish life.

MOFET JTEC - A Philosopher in the Eye of the Storm: Monsieur Chouchani and Lévinas's “Nameless” Essay

MOFET JTEC - A Philosopher in the Eye of the Storm: Monsieur Chouchani and Lévinas's “Nameless” Essay | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
This article made a case, albeit conjecturally, for understanding Lévinas’s essay “Nameless” as a text devoted to a man without a name—M. Chouchani. On an ideological and philosophical level, Lévinas’s essay does not tell the story of M. Chouchani and is not intended to publicly reveal his true name, his family affiliation or ethnic origin, or the educational home in which he grew up and developed. Rather, true to philosophical form, Lévinas offers a number of essential truths that can and should be learned from a teacher as virtuous as M. Chouchani. In retrospective view, the main points of this essay have the capacity to recount the great philosophical and ethical story that Lévinas attempts to tell based on the inspiration of the image and teachings of M. Chouchani.

MOFET JTEC - It Takes A (Jewish) Village: Yaldeinu | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
In a place where the Chanukah aisle at Target is tiny, like the kosher aisle in the local supermarket, Jewish parenting means being proactive. “Here in Portland, we constantly have to analyze and ask ourselves, ‘If it’s so hard, why am I doing it? Does Judaism really matter to me?’” It’s a question that many Jewish parents ask, and one that has brought three leading Jewish organizations together to help parents explore. The Yaldeinu Fellowship, the brainchild of The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, the Avi Chai Foundation, and the Kohelet Foundation, is an innovative leadership forum now halfway through its two-year pilot phase.

As the Jewish holiday most closely connected to the environment and the natural world, Tu Bishvat provides a great opportunity for teachers to include earth and environmental science in their curriculum. This year, we were inspired by Jewish texts about the natural world. For each text, we’ve taken out a particular topic you can focus on in your classroom and provided educational technology resources that can help your students reach their learning goals. Our hope is that after using these tools and developing a stronger understanding of Earth, your students will have a more meaningful Tu Bishvat.

Scientists at Haifa University have reconstructed the contents of one of the last two undeciphered Dead Sea Scrolls, revealing a unique calendar used by a Jewish sect that lived in the Judean Desert during the Second Temple period. The scroll, which is written in encrypted language, consists of 60 tiny fragments, some of them smaller than one square centimeter. A researcher had previously determined that these fragments were parts of six different scrolls, making it particularly difficult to assemble them in the correct order.

The Mazor mausoleum

The Mazor mausoleum | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

About 20 kilometers (14 miles) East of Tel Aviv, in a wooded area wedged between the Trans-Israel Highway and the ultra-Orthodox suburb of El’ad sits the only Roman-era building in Israel to have survived completely from floor to ceiling. It is a mausoleum, built for some unidentified 4th century muckety-muck and his wife. It is an impressive building, with classical Roman columns holding up the roof, the remains of the original sarcophagi cut into the floor and a side-room for raising doves, part of the cultic practice of the period.

MOFET JTEC - Challenging Linguistic Purism in Dual Language Bilingual Education: A Case Study of Hebrew in a New York City Public Middle School

MOFET JTEC - Challenging Linguistic Purism in Dual Language Bilingual Education: A Case Study of Hebrew in a New York City Public Middle School | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programs, in which students are taught language and academic content in English and a partner language, have dramatically grown in popularity in U.S. schools. Moving beyond the teaching of Spanish and Chinese, DLBE programs are now being offered in less commonly taught languages and attracting new student populations. Based on qualitative research conducted in a New York City public middle school that recently began a Hebrew DLBE program, we found that this program, in its inception and design, challenges traditional definitions of DLBE and offers new understandings about bilingual education for the 21st century. We argue that the policies and guidelines for the provision of DLBE and the scholarship upon which they are based are rooted in notions of linguistic purism that fail to consider or meet the needs of communities enrolling in bilingual education programs today.

MOFET JTEC - Israelis Are Flocking to this Silicon Valley Community Center | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
With a foot in the tech world and another in Jewish culture, the JCC in Palo Alto has transformed itself into a hub for local Israeli expatriates. Located on a sprawling 8.5-acre campus, the place known formally as the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center has done what many mainstream American Jewish institutions are still attempting: attracting American Israelis, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, to programs at a legacy organization.

Called the Israeli Cultural Connection, or ICC, the suite of Israeli programs at the JCC draws more than 20,000 people annually to its classes, seminars and concerts. They and their children celebrate holidays, keep up their Hebrew and Israeli identity, and inch closer to the institutions and norms that have long organized the American Jewish community.
