The Conversation We Should be Having

The Conversation We Should be Having | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

If we want to change the future of the diaspora Jewish community, if we want to ensure that the Israeli Americans maintain their sense of “Israeliness” culturally and emotionally, we have to start younger. We can’t cop out and exclude day school from the engagement conversation because the cost of Jewish day school is too big of a challenge to tackle.

MOFET JTEC - “From the Intuitive to the Intentional”: Designing a Constructivist Online Course | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Online programs are becoming more ubiquitous in higher education; however, there has been a lack of research on the merit of this style of educating. Using the concept of constructivism as a framework, the idea that individuals construct their own understanding of world experiences, the authors generated a case study to explore the efficacy of teaching “havruta study,” text analysis in student pairs with instructor facilitation, in an online format. Findings suggest that, through careful consideration of communication styles and student needs, highly interactive in-house courses can be adapted to online settings.

Tour Guide Monica Unikel Preserves Mexico City’s Jewish History

Tour Guide Monica Unikel Preserves Mexico City’s Jewish History | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Unikel has been organizing monthly walks through La Merced, Mexico City’s immigrant quarter of the early 20th century, for more than 20 years. From the 1920s through the end of WWII, a steady influx of Eastern European Jews—including Unikel’s family—came to Mexico, escaping anti-Semitism in countries like Poland, Ukraine, and Germany. Most considered Mexico a stopping point on their way to the United States, but many ended up staying when the U.S. capped immigration quotas. They settled in La Merced, working as cloth hagglers, tailors, and small-business men.

Unikel also runs the Justo Sierra Historic Synagogue, a cultural center based in Nidje Israel, the original name of one of the oldest synagogues in Mexico City; according to Time Out, it is one of the top destinations to visit in capital’s massive downtown.

In the world of digital imaging, there are two image formats that prevail above all else: JPEG (or JPG) and PNG.

At first glance, a single image shown in both formats might seem identical, but if you look close enough, and dig into the data, there is quite a difference between the two images. Further, each format is designed to be used in specific ways to make the most of its strengths and weaknesses. To help you better understand the differences, we created this guide on JPEG vs. PNG to help you know when to use which format.

Mindfulness Training for Teens Fails Important Test

Mindfulness Training for Teens Fails Important Test | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Despite the numerous outcome measures employed in the study, there was no evidence of any benefit for the mindfulness group at either the immediate post-test or the follow up. In fact, anxiety was higher at the follow up for males in the mindfulness group relative to males in the control group. The same was true for participants with low baseline depression and low baseline weight concerns; mindfulness training led to an increase in anxiety in these individuals over time.

MOFET JTEC - The Journey of Novice Teachers: Perceptions of Interns from a Teacher Training Program for Academics

MOFET JTEC - The Journey of Novice Teachers: Perceptions of Interns from a Teacher Training Program for Academics | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

The literature (Harari, Adler, & Shechter, 2007) discusses at length the difficulties that teachers experience when they start teaching and the number of people leaving the profession due to those difficulties (Arviv-Elyashiv & Zimmerman, 2013). This article discusses the characteristics of the journey for novice teachers from the Teacher Training Programs for Academics as experienced by them during their first year of teaching. The study focused on several aspects of this journey: experiences of success and failure, factors that promote and inhibit success during their internship, the extent to which novice teachers identify with the comparison immigrants in a new culture (Zabar Ben-Yehoshua, 2001), and changes the teachers experienced throughout the year.

Why is the West financing Palestinian terrorism?

Why is the West financing Palestinian terrorism? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

Imagine terrorists who have killed hundreds of people in Europe and the U.S. receiving generous rewards for their crimes.

And imagine further this blood money being indirectly funded by Western taxpayers.

As outrageous as it sounds, this is exactly what the Palestinian Authority (PA)—financially dependent on U.S. and European generosity—is doing.

Each year it pays about $140 million to terrorists who are or have been in Israeli prisons, and $175 million to families of terrorists killed in action, such as suicide bombers.

Leaning Toward Inclusive, Racially Aware Jewish Day Schools

Leaning Toward Inclusive, Racially Aware Jewish Day Schools | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
As a day school leader at the Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan, I am compelled to respond to these events by creating learning communities and experiences that will prepare my students to be successful in a racially and ethnically diverse world. I hope to empower them to be positive agents for change that will help lead us toward a more just society. To do that, my colleagues and I need to help our students see beyond public displays of hate by avowed white supremacists to more easily ignored systems that perpetuate racism. We need to start with our own predominantly White, Ashkenazi school community, where a “colorblind” approach to education risks perpetuating false assumptions about American and Jewish culture and history – such as the implicit and explicit message that being White is the norm against which individual and ethnic value is measured.

All media comes with an author and an agenda. Whether in the classroom or at home, help kids think critically about any media they view with critical questions that dig below the surface. Use these five essential questions as a springboard, and help kids dig deeper with even more critical questions of their own. And to really empower kids, have them create their own media with these same questions in mind. For additional lesson plans, videos, student handouts, and more on this topic, see our News & Media Literacy Toolkit.

Seventy years of the Dead Sea Scrolls

Seventy years of the Dead Sea Scrolls | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
We have arrived at a point when we truly have a right to celebrate 70 years of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Scroll scholars will gather at New York University to celebrate this milestone on November 16-17, 2017, and in Jerusalem from April 29 to May 3, 2018. It has been my distinct privilege to participate in the organization of both of these programs. They will no doubt show that we are on the cusp of 70 more years of significant research into the scrolls.

MOFET JTEC - Adult Learning is the Number One Priority for the Jewish Future | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
At this precarious moment for ensuring a vibrant Jewish future, there are many priorities for sustaining Jewish life. But among the many fine efforts to ensure a sense of continuity of the Jewish experience – Hebrew schools, summer camps, and engagement of young professionals – there is a route of engagement that has perhaps received the least amount of attention, the least amount funding, and the least prioritization in the greater consciousness of Jewish pedagogy. I am referring to Jewish adult education.

G‑d created the world with the attribute of kindness, and we help sustain the world with the kindness that we extend to others. Virtual kindness should not replace caring for others in our immediate spheres. However, what social media lacks in depth, it can make up for in scale and reach.

The following are some examples of virtual kindness that everyone can implement, which will leave a positive impact on the people in your networks.
