Time For Jewish Day Schools To Lead, Not Follow

Time For Jewish Day Schools To Lead, Not Follow | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
We, in the Jewish community, have a wealth of expertise in the fields of psychology and neuroscience.  Each year more and more of our best and brightest are entering fields of computer and data science.  It’s time we begin bridging the gap between their work and our schools.  Organizations such as AltSchool, Summit, Learning and The Brain, and Neuroscape, have begun a foray into these areas, but there is so much more to do.   Rather than waiting for others to do it and let the effects trickle down to our community, we, who place education at the very top of our values and obligations, ought to be out there leading the charge.

Why these experts say Trump’s Jerusalem recognition will help the peace process

Why these experts say Trump’s Jerusalem recognition will help the peace process | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
But a countervailing chorus of analysts, mostly on the right but stretching to the center, says the opposite: Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem is a strategically savvy course correction of American foreign policy. It has not hurt prospects for peace, they say, and there’s a good chance it will help.

The Media's Mistaken Predictions About Jerusalem Violence After Trump Prove It Is Biased on Israel/Palestine

In the case of Jerusalem, it seems likely that the media’s overemphasis on Israel’s centrality led to similarly mistaken assumptions about how Trump’s pronouncement would inflame the entire region. As it turns out, that Israel-obsessed region existed more in the minds of the media than in the actual Middle East, which has bigger problems on its hands.

How Many Candles Do We Light on Chanukah?

How Many Candles Do We Light on Chanukah? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Jews worldwide light Chanukah candles for eight straight nights, starting on the 25th of the Hebrew month of Kislev. Common practice is to light one candle on the first night of Chanukah, and to add an extra candle on each of the subsequent nights. In order to appreciate the depth of this mitzvah, we must explore its Talmudic roots.

In this Thinking Gemara shiur, we will examine the mitzvah of lighting Chanukah candles under a microscope, and look at a key passage in the Talmud that reveals the three levels of its performance. Through studying commentaries on the passage, we will uncover two major conceptual discussions that began in the twelfth century and continue to the present day.

Innovating Pedagogy 2017 – The Ed Techie

Innovating Pedagogy 2017 – The Ed Techie | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
When we started the intention was to make it distinct from the NMC New Horizon reports by focusing on pedagogy. I think, to be honest, in those early ones there was probably a technology focus still, but as it’s progressed it has really moved away from this to more pedagogy, socially focused issues.

MOFET JTEC - British Library Publishes Treasure Trove of Hebrew Manuscripts

MOFET JTEC - British Library Publishes Treasure Trove of Hebrew Manuscripts | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
The British Library last week launched a new website showcasing 1,300 Hebrew manuscripts, ranging from ancient Torah scrolls and prayer books to philosophical, theological and scientific works. The new site is the library’s first bilingual online collection, allowing users to search for scans of the manuscripts in Hebrew and English.

The works searchable on the site include the Hispano-Moresque Haggadah from 13th century Spain, an illustrated edition of Maimonides’ Code of Law from 15th century Portugal, and the Lisbon Bible from 1482, 14 years before the Portuguese Jews were expelled from their homeland.

MOFET JTEC - This Torah Study Tool Is Everywhere — But You May Have Never Heard of It | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Sefaria, a nimble online database of Jewish texts in both their original language and in translation, is rapidly becoming the red-hot center of the source sheet universe, which I assure you is a thing. Since Sefaria was founded in 2013, over 12,000 people have made some 74,000 source sheets using the site’s handy source sheet builder. Of those, 7,200 of their creations are available online.

And the range of subjects is testament not only to the depth of the Jewish canon but to the breadth of Jewish obsessions. There are sheets for lessons on sex, death, love, money, family strife and sibling rivalry, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. For Simchat Torah, there’s a sheet on the rules about women dancing with a Torah scroll. There’s even a sheet about whether or not Jews should take part in Halloween.

MOFET JTEC - Twin Cities—A Matter of Identity and Belonging

MOFET JTEC - Twin Cities—A Matter of Identity and Belonging | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
The term “twin cities” refers to a program in which cities from different places in the world form a “twinning” alliance that serves as a setting for educational, cultural, political, and social collaborations (Grosspietsch 2009). The purpose of the program is to promote the twin cities in all aspects of life (Jayne, Hubbard, and Bell 2013) and facilitate a feeling of belonging and identity among their residents (Ogawa 2012). In the current study, the cities of Beer Sheva and Nahariya were taken as case studies for examining the contribution of the program to promoting residents’ feeling of belonging to their Jewish identity. Specifically, the current study attempted to examine the effect of town of residence and age group on feeling of belonging, and whether familiarity with the Twin Cities program affected the feeling of belonging to Jewish identity, in the assumption that residents familiar with the program would report a stronger feeling of belonging than residents not familiar with it.

I strongly recommend this book for volunteer leaders, teachers, and professionals in communal organizations and community centers. It is a tool that will equip us to work with all our constituencies, whether they are colleagues, students, or volunteers – helping them strengthen their Jewish identity and find the place they are looking for in the montage of the Jewish People. The book is refreshing and will encourage its readers to think about how they identify as a Jewish individual within the family of the Jewish People.
