Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, OD (born December 27, 1986)[2] is a Jamaican track and field athlete. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Fraser-Pryce ascended to prominence in the 2008 Olympic Games when at 21 years-old, the relatively unknown athlete became the first Caribbean woman to win 100m gold at the Olympics.

The Jamaican national bobsleigh team represents Jamaica in international bobsledding competitions. The team first gained fame during their debut in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where they were seen as underdogs, representing a tropical nation in a winter sport. The team returned to the Winter Olympics again in 1992, 1994, and subsequent competitions. In 1988, Jamaica became the first West Indian nation to enter the Winter Olympics when they sent a bobsleigh team to Calgary, Canada

Jamaica was the first English-speaking country to open its market.This process was conducted in different phases, beginning in 2000 with the liberalization of mobile telephone services. In March 2003 the entire telecommunications sector, including international services, was opened to competition. The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) was given the main responsibility of regulating the sector, and different aspects of the regulatory function that were not assigned to this office were assigned to the Fair Trading Commission, the Spectrum Management Authority and the Broadcasting Commission.

In the book A Knock at Midnight: Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. he wrote:

"Here you have people from many national backgrounds: Chinese, Indians, so-called Negroes, and you can just go down the line, Europeans, European and people from many, many nations. Do you know they all live there and they have a motto in Jamaica, “Out of many people, one people.” And they say, “Here in Jamaica we are not Chinese, (Make it plain) we are not Japanese, we are not Indians, we are not Negroes, we are not Englishmen, we are not Canadians. But we are all one big family of Jamaicans.” One day, here in America, I hope that we will see this and we will become one big family of Americans."

Would it be too bold to say that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream started here?

Jamaica was the first commercial producer of bananas in the Western Hemisphere. Thanks in part to shipping and refrigeration, bananas were able to be sent long distances. Elders and Fyffes established the Imperial Direct Line between Bristol and Jamaica in 1901. This was taken over by the United Fruit Company in 1910.
