Jaguar Mark II - The Gentleman's Express

Jaguar Mark II - The Gentleman's Express | Jaguar Mk2 - Space, Grace, and Pace! | Scoop.it
The Jaguar Mark II is commonly referred to as the Gentleman's Express, particularly the 3.8 litre version fitted with the twin cam XK straight-6, capable of 220bhp in stock trim and a top speed of over 125 mph and 0 to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds. These are genuinely remarkable figures for a 4-door saloon car first offered for sale in the 1950s.

Little-Known Mitsuoka Motors Is Japan's Best Kept Car Secret, But It's Coming To The West

Little-Known Mitsuoka Motors Is Japan's Best Kept Car Secret, But It's Coming To The West | Jaguar Mk2 - Space, Grace, and Pace! | Scoop.it
Photo courtesy of Mitsuoka Motors If you thought most of Japan’s car designs were as bland as buttered bread, then check out this uniquely Japanese piece of penmanship. It’s the 25th anniversary model of the Viewt from Mitsuoka Motors. Mitsu-watcha who? Mitsuoka is Japan’s tenth-largest carmaker and yet most people have never heard of them. Why? Because up until 2016, they only sold cars in Japan. But after testing crowd reaction to their Mazda MX-5 based, Morgan-inspired Himiko at the 2015 London Motor Show, they decided to offer that model, renamed the Mitsuoka Roadster, to the U.K. market. But with sales exceeding 12,000 units over the last quarter century, by far their biggest-selling model has been the quirky Viewt. If this curvy 4-door sedan appears to be a blatant copy of a well-known British classic, well, that’s because it’s meant to be. Designed on purpose to pay homage to the legendary Jaguar MkII, the Viewt employs a Nissan March’s platform, 1.2-liter powertrain and suspension. Having driven this car, I can tell you that it performs and handles almost the same as the Nissan March on which it's based, but with an added air of elegance thanks to those British lines. Some may scoff at these copycat curves, but in Japan at least, Mitsuoka cars work. People are looking for something different. Photo courtesy of Mitsuoka Motors More on Forbes: Sexiness Springs Forth From Japan's Future Cars Mitsuoka started out as a car repair shop in the 1960s in Toyama, 250 miles west of Tokyo. It expanded to include car dealerships in the late 80s before designing and building its own cars. But the real dream of self-admitted British car nut and company chairman, Susumu Mitsuoka, was to be recognized as a fully-fledged carmaker in its own right. He achieved that accolade in the mid-90s after designing his own chassis for the Caterham-lookalike Zero 1, a sportscar that employed Mazda’s MX-5 1.6 liter drivetrain. To be recognized as a “carmaker” in Japan, all you have to do is show that you can make a reliable, safe, unique chassis after proving that your new car can pass several stringent crash-tests. Tired of Japan’s boring designs and wanting to create his own masterpieces, the maverick Mitsuoka started out by borrowing chassis and powertrains from major American and Japanese carmakers and dropping significantly remolded bodies onto them. From the late 80s into the mid-90s, he built a slew of adventurous-looking models, many extracting strong design hints from English classics like Jaguar and Rolls Royce. Some of his more adventurous models include the Excalibur-inspired La Seyde coupe which sits on a Mustang platform and employs Ford’s V8 drivetrain. Yet another model boasting a huge Rolls Royce-like grille and lights is the Galue, a mid-sized sedan dropped onto a 2.0 liter Nissan Silvia platform. And the reason Mitsuoka thrives in Japan is simple. He knows that there is a small but resilient core of customers across the country who enjoy his unique cars and will keep coming back for more. The company is now banking on that enthusiasm spilling over into the British market with expected sales of more than 24 Mitsuoka Roadsters a year. The U.K. buyer is a little more discerning than those in Japan, especially when it comes to cars that take significant design hints from British classics. Will Mitsuoka catch on in Britain and beyond? Only time will tell.
