Mexico Distributes DTV Sets in Preparation for Analog Shutdown | TVTechnology.com

Mexico Distributes DTV Sets in Preparation for Analog Shutdown | TVTechnology.com | IV Technology | Scoop.it
Mexico is the only country in the world that has as a policy toward the transition to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) the delivery of digital television sets, instead of decoders.
Communications Undersecretary José Ignacio Peralta said that given the situation with the first analog shutdown in Latin America in Tijuana, it was more efficient to deliver TV sets to the low-income population instead of TV decoders. When the analog shutdown occurred in Tijuana in May 2013, several citizens protested at being unable to receive television signals.
Peralta said that the policy to deliver TV sets to the population does not affect the projected Mexican budget of 26 billion pesos (about US$ 2 billion). He also said that the delivery of these digital devices is better for the environment as they consume less power than analog sets.
“There is an improvement compared to last year's model, which allowed for the delivery of decoders instead of TV sets, and that it did not allow for all the benefits of digitization, and that it did not meet a new public policy objective of digital inclusion, which is stated in the Mexican Constitution,” Peralta said.Click headline to read more--

The Iranian Drones That Save Lives - YouTube

We've seen how drones can be a crucial asset to search and rescue operations, but Iran's RTS Lab has taken an entirely new angle. RTS's Pars drone carries a payload of life preservers that can be delivered to a drowning swimmer far faster than a lifeguard. As we saw in testing in the Caspian Sea, the drone can also work at night, using bright lights, biothermal sensors, and a built-in camera to stream video to rescuers on shore. The concept works well, and it's an excellent example of how powerful drones—which are cheaper and easier to use than just about any other aerial delivery vehicle—can actually be. Here in the US, where the FAA remains steadfast in its desire to squelch the nascent commercial drone industry, this Iranian drone built of Chinese parts sets an example of what can be done when we set our eyes to the skies to do good.

Out in the Open: The Tiny Box That Lets You Take Your Data Back From Google | Enterprise | WIRED | IV Technology | Scoop.it

For open source developer Johannes Ernst, what the world really needs is a simple device that anyone can use to take their data back from the wilds of the internet.

So he designed the Indie Box, a personal web server preloaded with open source software that lets you run your own web services from your home network–and run them with relative ease.

You can’t buy an Indie Box yet, but you can pre-order one through the crowdfunding site Indie GoGo.

The first Indie Box will run off an Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives that mirror each other to help protect your data.

Software will include ownCloud, which offers a calendar, address book, and Dropbox-style file sharing; the photo album apps mediagoblin and Trovebox; and the e-mail client Mailpile.

We are finally seeing the de-centralized internet coming together.

Lots of people are working on this, both on software and hardware (like this computer/personal server) to make it a reality.

Watch the Northern Lights from Glass Igloos at Hotel Kakslauttanen, Finland

Watch the Northern Lights from Glass Igloos at Hotel Kakslauttanen, Finland | IV Technology | Scoop.it

What better way to view the northern lights than from your bed through a glass roof?

That’s what the accommodation Finnish hotel Kakslauttanen offers guests within a village of geodesic dome glass igloos. The unique setting merges old and new using a traditional igloo form, composed of angular glass framework.

The igloos are created from a highly effective thermal glass which keeps the insides nice and cosy while temperatures outside plummet to -30˚. This special glass manages to stop condensation from forming on the inside while also preventing frost from settling on the outside of the igloo to offer guests a clear view of the northern lights...

This is such a different and unique concept of hotel especially with a glass as the roof of the hotel room that allows customers to enjoy the northern lights with the luxury ambience.
However, this kind of hotel concept might have spent a lot of cost to build because of the concept of architecture that prevents the top of the glass roof to frost. Thus, it should be an expensive accommodation to be spent on.
On the other hand, this concept of hotel might affect the surrounding environment.
Therefore, the customers might consider some of these points before they decide to stay in this hotel.

Want to see the northern lights which only appear in a season a year, choosing Finnish hotel Kakslauttanen is the right decision for people who want to see a natural phenomenon. The unique architechture look like a igloo outside but fully furniture inside bring to the customer the best experience while staying here. The igloo, is a dome shaped of Eskimo house use to block of solids snow, built with a special glass so that you can see clearly the view from inside. A special glass was made to prevent the condensation frost from settling on the outside of igloo and keep inside warmer with the temperature at minus 3 degree while temperatures outside plummet to minus 30 degree. I would like to go there to see a special natural phenomenon in the world and enjoy the unique experience you can have.

These are familiar processes in the cycle but they are so often neglected despite the major benefits that they have on even the simplest task: 1) Define- The structure what needs to be modified, 2) Model- Evaluate the performance, ‘what if’ analysis, 3) Execute- Implement the best improvements, 4) Monitor- Administer the changes, 5)Optimize- Add appropriate changes for continuous improvement. Then start the process again.

New invention makes ocean water drinkable using a weak electric current

New invention makes ocean water drinkable using a weak electric current | IV Technology | Scoop.it
Chemists with the University of Texas and the University of Marburg have devised a method of using a small electrical field that will remove the salt from seawater. Incredibly this technique requires little more than a store-bought battery. Called electrochemically mediated seawater desalination (EMSD) this technique has improved upon the current water desalination method. This “water chip” method “could bring relief to millions around the globe who lack potable water.”This method “is much simpler and consumes less energy than other forms of desalination.”
