Close-up snaps make you look unattractive and less trustworthy

Close-up snaps make you look unattractive and less trustworthy | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it
Here is why your Facebook profile picture should never be a close-up!

Close-up photo subjects are judged to look less attractive, less trustworthy and less competent, according to a new study.

Researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) led by Pietro Perona, an art history enthusiast, suspected that Renaissance portrait paintings often featured subtle geometric warping of faces to make the viewer feel closer or more distant to a subject.

Perona wondered if the same sort of warping might affect photographic portraits—with a similar effect on their viewers.

He and colleagues gathered opinions on 36 photographs representing two different images of 18 individuals. One of each pair of images was taken at close range and the second at a distance of about seven feet.

"It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance," Bryan said in a statement.

"Of course, the close picture would also normally be larger, higher resolution and have different lighting—but we controlled for all of that in our study. What you're left with is a warping effect that is so subtle that nobody in our study actually noticed it. Nonetheless, it's a perceptual clue that
influenced their judgments," Bryan said.

The subtle distance warping, however, had a big effect: close-up photos made people look less trustworthy, according to study participants. The close-up photo subjects were also judged to look less attractive and competent.

"We went through a bunch of experiments, some testing people in the lab, and some even over the Internet; we asked participants to rate trustworthiness of faces, and in some experiments we asked them to invest real money in unfamiliar people whose faces they saw as a direct measure of how much they trusted them," researcher Ralph Adolphs, said.

Across all of the studies, the researchers saw the same effect, Adolphs said.

In photos taken from a distance of around two feet, a person looked untrustworthy, compared to photos taken seven feet away.

These two distances were chosen by the researchers because one is within, and the other outside of, personal space—which on average is about three to four feet from the body.

In some of the studies, the researchers digitally warped images of faces taken at a distance to artificially manipulate how trustworthy they would appear.

"Once you know the relation between the distance warp and the trustworthiness judgment, you could manipulate photos of faces and change the perceived trustworthiness," Perona said.

The study was published in the journal PLoS One.

Studies reveal make-up may cause an untimely menopause

Studies reveal make-up may cause an untimely menopause | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

Chemicals found in make-up, hairspray and food packaging are causing women to hit menopause early, researchers warn. Researchers at Washington University, Missouri found that a group of chemicals known as pthalates found in plastics, cosmetics, household products and food packaging may be disrupting women's reproductive systems, including their ovaries, and leading to early menopause. Pthalates are already thought to raise the risk of cancer, diabetes and obesity.

The study found that those exposed to high doses have been found to go through menopause almost two and a half years before other women, the Daily Mail reported. In some cases, these chemicals may be causing women to stop having periods 15 years too soon, say scientists. The study looked at the levels of pthalates in the blood or urine of 5,700 women.

Those with the highest amounts were found to have gone through the menopause an average of 2.3 years before the others. The typical age of the menopause is 51, so women exposed to the highest levels were hitting it aged 49. Dr Natalia Grindler found that some women may be going through the menopause 15 years early, in their mid-thirties.

An early menopause is linked to higher rates of strokes, heart disease, bone problems and fatal brain haemorrhages. "We don't know yet if some of them are going through it one year earlier or some are going through it 15 years earlier," Grindler said.

"Early menopause has a lot of impact on your health. We absolutely think these chemicals have the potential to affect ovarian function and human reproduction," Grindler added. The study could not explain why some women were exposed to higher levels of these chemicals. It may be that they woremore make-up, drank bottled water or ate more packaged foods. Experts urged women not to worry themselves unnecessarily.

"My concern is not high at this stage. Phthalate exposure is ubiquitous and thus impossible to avoid altogether. Eating fresh, unpackaged food can reduce phthalate exposure but will not eliminate it," Professor Richard Sharpe, who specialises in reproductive health at the University of Edinburgh said.

The study was presented at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine's conference in San Diego, California

For Yash Chopra life is not Jab Tak Hai Jaan

For Yash Chopra life is not Jab Tak Hai Jaan | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

‘Main aur meri tanhai, aksar yeh baatein karte hai...’ that Yash Raj Chopra was the man who meant love on reel for us, he meant the man who has woven magic tales out of the four-letter word that turns the world upside down. He has experimented with different shades of love in all its multifaceted revelations; he has concocted tales that everyone who has loved once in life can connect to. He taught hypocrites ‘Jinke khud ke ghar sheeshe ke bane hote hai, unhein doosron ke ghar pe patthar nahin phainkne chahiye.’

He was the story-teller who made us believe Simran will belong to Raj till the end in his 1995 smashing box office hit DDLJ, and he made billions of girls fall head o’er heels for Rahul in 1998 in Dil Toh Pagal Hai. His actresses in immaculate white, the spread of daffodils, the horizon-kissing stretch of yellow mustard fields in full bloom and breathtakingly gorgeous foreign locales are what Yash Chopra film instilled into us for decades. His magical love stories inspired filmy loverboys impress their lady-loves through unimaginable ways.

He introduced ‘Jaadu...teri nazar’ to the beating hearts of the 90’s college goers. Does any Holi celebration go by without ‘Rang Barse’ not playing anywhere? Is there any Indian (or even an NRI) who didn’t feel proud over his ‘mitti ki khushboo’? Bollywood is shocked to have lost its most celebrated director, and the entire industry is mourning as his cremation is just hours away. All everyone is recalling besides his films is his last interview with Shah Rukh Khan on his 80th birthday last September 27th where he talked about romance, movies, and the to-be-released Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which he announced was his last directorial venture before retirement. Yash Chopra is the definition of romance, drama, action, dialogues, emotions, music and dance, in all its astonishing splendour. The winner of six National Awards and 11 Filmfare Awards among a slew of honours, he received the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001.

Yash Chopra was born on September 27th, 1932 in Lahore, Pakistan. The youngest of eight children, one of whom was elder brother B. R. Chopra who became a director and producer, Yash developed an early love of watching Hindi films. Brother B. R. Chopra wanted him to study engineering but young Yash went to Mumbai with Rs. 200 in his pocket and his mother's blessing to live his most craved dream. In Mumbai, Yash Chopra worked as an assistant with I. S. Johar and then with his brother B R Chopra. Two years later, he landed his first film as director - Dhool Ka Phool in 1959. In 1971, Mr. Chopra founded Yash Raj Films, which meant that he could now independently produce the films he directed.

The rest that followed is history, and the story of a man who chased his own dreams, and taught a nation how to dream big. May his soul rest in peace, but some names stay immortal in spirit for a lifetime and more. Because for some people, life is not jab tak hai jaan!

Romney ahead of Obama among 50% likely voters

Romney ahead of Obama among 50% likely voters | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

About half of all likely voters now prefer Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, while as less than half would re-elect the incumbent US President Barack Obama, a latest polls show. "While Romney's four-percentage-point advantage is not statistically significant, he has consistently edged ahead of Obama each of the past several days in Gallup's seven-day rolling averages conducted entirely after the October 3rd presidential debate," the Gallup said releasing the details of its latest poll yesterday.

Prior to that debate, regarded as a decisive Romney win by political experts and Americans who watched it – Romney averaged less than a one-point lead over Obama among likely voters, it said.

The latest result, from October 9-15, is based on 2,723 likely voters drawn from more than 3,100 registered voters. "With three weeks to go in the campaign, Obama appears to be losing momentum, and now trails Romney by four percentage points among likely voters," Gallup said hours before the second of the three presidential debates in New York.

According to Gallup, Romney's four-point edge over Obama in likely voters' preferences for President contrasts with Obama's seven-point win over McCain in the 2008 election, it said. Real Clear Politics, which keeps tracks of all major national polls, said yesterday that both Obama and Romney are in a virtual tie, with the latter leading by a mere 0.4 points on an average of all the major national polls.

Lady Gaga to buy idol Edith Piaf’s toenails! | Itvnewsindia.com

Lady Gaga to buy idol Edith Piaf’s toenails! | Itvnewsindia.com | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

London, Oct 15 - Pop star Lady Gaga is keen on buying belongings of her musical inspiration, French singer Edith Piaf, including her toenails. The 'Born This Way' hit maker is spending some of her fortune on items belonging to Piaf, reported Sun online. She's eyeing up clothes, shoes, perfume bottles, private letters and even inquired about purchasing the star's toenails.

Gaga is a huge fan of Edith, and wants to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her death next year. Her representatives have also been in negotiations with that of the Piaf estate about buying rights to her first filmed performance and in talks with EMI to use nine of her songs.

They are likely to be sampled on a track to feature on Gaga's next album, while the 1941 film footage could be broadcast on stage during her next big tour. "Gaga sees a lot of herself in Edith. She, too, was a rebellious character in her era. There's an awful lot of red tape to get through — it's a complicated process. But she's hoping the Piaf estate wants to ensure, with her help, that the music can be introduced to a new audience.

"Considering the size of Gaga's global following, Edith's music will gain a huge new fan base," said a source. Gaga's fascination with the French icon has also been in evidence at recent events she has attended. The singer has insisted on playing Piaf's music as her entrance theme at parties and her latest request was for a bash held in Piaf's home town during Paris Fashion Week.

Religion never tarnished them: Bollywood Khans | Itvnewsindia.com

Religion never tarnished them: Bollywood Khans | Itvnewsindia.com | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

With the most rumoured wedding of the year of the most celebrated Bollywood couple finally begin with a private Sangeet ceremony, an interesting angle pops out that is Bollywood Khans and their Hindu better halves always made excellent couples. Nawab of Pataudi Saif Ali Khan is to wed his lady love of five years Kareena Kapoor this October 17th.

The card has been printed and sent out, the wardrobes designed and the guests have started arriving from near and far. When we talk of Bollywood Khans marrying Hindu girls, the story that first comes to our mind is that of The Badshah of Bollywood and his real life fairytale.

Shah Rukh Khan tied the knot with Gauri Chhiba (popular as Gauri Khan now) in 1991who was a Hindu Punjabi Brahmin girl from a joint family. Nodding yes to Shah Rukh for her was almost an impossible choice to make but love doesn’t follow any culture, religion or rule. Life took its tests and destiny played unfair games, but Shah Rukh chased his dream and achieved Gauri in a truly ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ style.

Religion posed as the key trouble and Gauri’s parents were hell bent on not allowing her marry a Muslim groom, but after Gauri went to Mumbai with her friends, Shah Rukh combed the streets and lanes of the city to find her out. Love blossomed once again and today we have Bollywood’s most popular couple Gauri-SRK personifying eternal love. Inside Mannat, the Quran and an idol of Radha-Krishna are kept side by side. Namaaz and daily worship has been practised simultaneously for years now.

The Aamir Khan-Kiran Rao story again kept the Khan and their Hindu wives trend intact. He is an iconic superstar and she is a debutant director. He is sweet and serious in his late 40s and she is little more than half his age. But hold on, when did we say love has set criteria? They met on the sets of Lagaan in which Rao was working as an assistant director.

They married in 2005 and their son born in 2012 has been named Azad Rao Khan. When you enter their posh Pali Hill residence, all you would notice is art, sophistry and a harmonious essence of togetherness. Probably this is why true love is said to be beyond pen, paper and God. Aamir’s nephew Imran too tied the knot with long time girlfriend Avantika Malik in a big fat wedding party last year. But soon after the wedding due to renovation in their original home, they stayed at a common accommodation for almost a year, even without a maid!

While the world still loses itself to taboos, superstitions and religion centric riots, our Bollywood Khans and their Hindu ladies have sketched love sagas that remain as stories to be told. From mehendi to nikah, everything was performed at all these marriages, but the best part is when asked, all the couples said, ‘Marriage is all about deciding you’re going to live with someone for the rest of your life, and the only ritual is constant faith.”

It does pay to look your best at work: study

It does pay to look your best at work: study | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

Melbourne, Oct 8 - Attractive people are usually hired sooner, get promotions more quickly, and are paid better thantheir less-attractive peers,  researchers have claimed.

Researchers found that attractive people earn an average 3 to 4 per cent more than people with 'below-average' looks, the 'Sydney Morning Herald' reported. The study, led by Daniel Hamermesh, professor of economics at the University of Texas analysed the concept of beauty as a factor in a person's success in multiple ways.

Beautiful people tend to bring in more money for their companies, and are therefore seen as more valuable employees and hard workers, according to professor Dario Maestripieri, from the University of Chicago. Maestripieri calls this principle "the pleasure of dealing with good-looking people."

"Good-looking people are more appealing as potential sex partners," Maestripieri says, "and [so] other people choose to interact with them, to spend time near them, talk with them, buy insurance from them, and hire them as employees." Hamermesh, however, believes that it's not just the 'sex appeal' that makes attractive people more successful and there are still ways to succeed despite one's looks.

He said that attractive people tend to have desirable personality traits, like higher self-confidence - likely a direct result of their good looks-that appeal to employers."Beauty may just reflect self-esteem. Perhaps people's self-confidence manifests itself in their behaviour, so that their looks are rated more highly, and their self-esteem makes them more desirable and higher-paid employees," he said.

"Another possibility is that beauty and the attractiveness of one's personality are positively related, and that it is the general sparkle of one's personality, not one's beauty, that increases earnings," he said. Researchers at Rice University and the University of Houston also found that people with facial blemishes and "disfigurements"- birthmarks, scars, blemishes - were more likely to be rated poorly by their interviewers.

According to their study, the interviewers tended to recall less information about these candidates, which negatively impacted their evaluations.    (PTI)

...And the grand wedding saga continues | Itvnewsindia.com | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it
After a registered marriage, newly-weds Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor went in for an exchange of vows before hosting a grand reception that went on till the wee hours today.   While there were rumours that a 'nikaah' was held, Kareena's close friend and fashion designer Manish Malhotra said that there was a simple exchange of vows between the two actors, who have been dating for five years. "They just exchanged vows at the Taj Mahal hotel in Colaba. There were no 'saath pheras'... They did not adhere to any particular style of wedding," Malhotra said.
The marriage at Saif's residence here was a simple affair yesterday afternoon, but the post-wedding functions at the South Mumbai hotel saw a host of B-town celebs like Shah Rukh Khan with wife Gauri, Priety Zinta, Karan Johar, Tusshar Kapoor, Salman Khan's sister Alvira, Anil Kapoor with daughter Sonam.
Among family members present at the post-wedding party were father of the bride Randhir Kapoor, mother Babita, uncles Rajiv Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, wife Neetu, son Ranbir Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor's son Aditya, Sharmila Tagore, Soha Ali Khan with beau Kunal Khemu and Saif's sister Saba. The most gorgeous appearance was that of the rare Kapoor at any event, paternal grandmother Krishna Raj Kapoor, widowed wife of the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor. 11-year old Ibrahim and 16-year old Sara, Saif’s children from his previous marriage to Amrita Singh in 1991 were also present.
Amitabh Bachchan's daughter Shweta and her son, Boney Kapoor's son Arjun Kapoor and his uncle Sanjay Kapoor, Fardeen Khan and designer Vikram Phadnis were also seen at the party.  Malhotra said that the 32-year-old actress wore Saif's grandmother's traditional gharara for the ceremony last night. The actor's mother Sharmila Tagore had worn the same gharara at her own 'nikaah'. She then passed it on to her son's new wife.
Delhi-based designer Ritu Kumar was given the responsibility of restoring and embellishing the gharara. "I worked on the antique Pataudi gharara that was restored by Ritu Kumar for Kareena's wedding... we did the final fittings and added a bit of touch of embroidery here and there," Malhotra said.
"When Saif and Kareena exchanged vows, she wore Sharmilaji's gharara for some time," Malhotra said. Later, Kareena changed into a Malhotra creation for the post-wedding party and Saif donned a Banarsi brocade achkan by designer Raghvendra Rathore. "Kareena wore a burgundy colour embellished gharara with maroon duppatta. I gave a very old world charm to all the ghararas. The party had 80-100 people and went on till 3 am," Malhotra said.

America a ‘culture shock’ for Potter star Emma Watson | Itvnewsindia.com | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

London, Oct 17 - ‘Harry Potter’ star Emma Watson says she is still trying to come to terms with American men because they are much more forward than guys back home in Britain.

The 22-year-old said she suffered a bit of a culture shock when she became a student at Brown University as she was asked out on a date within days, reported Daily Star. "English guys are very well put together. They dress really well and they are very well mannered, but they are also very restrained. Usually, in the whole courting situation, I'm used to being, first of all, ignored for the first two months of the ritual.

"And then maybe they'll acknowledge my presence. Then, they'll probably be a little mean to me. And then, maybe, well, you know whatever. Then I arrive in America and I remember a few nights into Brown this guy just being like, 'I like you. You're great. Let's go on a date. Let's do it.' I'm like, 'I'm sorry, what just happened?' This is, like, a huge culture shock for me," she said.

Kejriwal: Khurshid will bail out Mulayam-Akhilesh and vice versa | Itvnewsindia.com

Kejriwal: Khurshid will bail out Mulayam-Akhilesh and vice versa | Itvnewsindia.com | ITVIndiaNews | Scoop.it

New Delhi, Oct 15 - Arvind Kejriwal today alleged that there was a "quid pro quo" between the Congress, which is supporting Salman Khurshid on his NGO's controversy, and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav who is facing a disproportionate assets case in Supreme Court. On Uttar Pradesh government's probe into the alleged irregularities of Dr. Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust run by Khurshid and his wife Louise, Kejriwal said the Minister and the father-son duo of Yadav and Akhilesh will bail out each other.

"There is enough evidence building up but the question is who will conduct an investigation. Akhilesh Yadav? A case of disproportionate assets is pending against his father Mulayam Singh in Supreme Court. Who will appoint the government lawyer against Mulayam? The Law Minister will do.

"Now Khurshid will save Mulayam Singh and Mulayam's son will save Khurshid," he said addressing IAC activists on the fourth day of their protest at Parliament Street demanding Khurshid's resignation. Kejriwal presented a disabled person who alleged that he was not provided any help as claimed by the NGO.

"Why is the Congress defending Khurshid's NGO? What is the relationship? Is it Khurshid's NGO or is it the Congress party's NGO? The party is definitely involved somewhere," he said.

Khurshid has denied the allegations of irregularities in his NGO.

Levelling fresh charges against Khurshid, Kejriwal alleged that one Pankaj Kumar from Mainpuri whose name figures in the list of beneficiaries did not get any help from the NGO. "The document given to government says he has been provided with a hearing aid. But he has problems in his legs. He was not given any hearing aid," Kejriwal claimed in the presence of Kumar.
