Thailand Startup Funding Report

The Thai Startup Funding Report 2012-2015 (TSFR) offers comprehensive coverage revealing the progress and trends of VC funding transactions in Thailand during the dawn of the Thai startup ecosystem. The TSFR commences with an overview consisting of consecutive annual summaries of VC funding activities in Thailand. The TSFR offers a list of all reported VC funding transactions in Thailand from 2012 to 2015. For each transaction listed the date reported, funding recipients, category of venture, amounts that have been publically disclosed, funding stage and participating investors will be displayed. In addition, links to the funding recipient websites, published articles associated with the funding transactions listed and to the participating investors websites are provided. The TSFR is filled with valuable aggregate data prepared for the first time. Annual aggregate figures include funding amounts, number of transactions, number of deals per funding stage and average deal size per funding stage are provided. The annual figures are aggregated to show the total amounts from 2012 to the end of 2015. In addition to the total number of transactions and funding amounts during this four year period, the numbers and average transaction size are also displayed by funding stage. Other aggregate data includes the top five categories based on number of transactions and funding amounts, top five funding recipients based on reported transaction amounts, top six investors based on number of transactions and transactions of top six investors based on funding stage. The aggregate data is also displayed in charts and graphs. The TSFR includes several supplemental sections. A Thai portfolio of investors holding multiple Thai startups is provided followed by a section dedicated to the funding activities of Thai-based incubator and accelerator programs. The TSFR offers a variety of directories showing funded startups, active Thai-based investors and Thai crowd funding sources and concludes with a chronological listing of Thai funding and exit announcements covered in the media. Post-coup Thailand barely retained its position among the World Bank’s top 50 economies worldwide and has ranked third among Asean countries on the ease of doing business during the past year.

In its detailed rankings, Thailand ranked 97th worldwide in getting credit, 96th for ease of starting a business, 70th in paying taxes, 39th in dealing with construction permits, 57th in registering property and enforcing contracts, 56th in trading across borders, 36th for protecting minority investors, and 49th in resolving insolvency.

The Report is further supplemented with quarterly summaries, a section dedicated to Thai-based incubator and accelerator programs and a chronological listing of Thai funding and exit announcements in the media. Whenever we learn of a new transaction we will immediately update the Report by adding the new transaction to our Report and updating all the aggregated data. In spite of political turmoil, Thailand is still hanging on pretty well. But I do think Cambodia is coming on strong and I'd certainly take a look at Sihanoukville before I decided for sure on Thailand.

 

ChiengMai used to be the magical place to go but the air quality there has gotten really bad I hear. Plus, I also hear that you're beginning to see more than a little resentment of foreigners in Thailand now (depending on where you're talking about and on the situation).
