Report: Traditional TV Market Share to Drop to 60% by 2030 | Karl Bode | DSLReports.com | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

A new report by The Diffusion Group (TDG) predicts that the traditional pay TV industry will shrink 26% by 2030. As a result, traditional television will reach only 60% of households -- compared to the 81% currently served today. The report notes that the biggest reason, you'll be shocked to learn, is the rise in more flexible, less expensive streaming video alternatives. Over the next twelve years, the report predicts that "virtual pay TV" (read: alternative streaming) services will increase their market share from a current level of 4% to around 14%.

Given the rate of growth we've already seen from the likes of DirecTV Now, Sling TV, and other options, that could be an under-estimate.

"TDG said early on that the future of TV was an app. Unfortunately, most incumbent MVPDs weren't taking notes," TDG analyst Joel Espelien said in a statement. "The question is no longer if the future of TV is an app, but how quickly and economically incumbents can adapt to this truth and transition to an all-broadband app-based live multi-channel system."

FCC chairman sets out to scrap open internet access rules

FCC chairman sets out to scrap open internet access rules | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) - The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission set out Tuesday to scrap rules around open internet access, a move that would allow giant cable and telecom companies to throttle broadband speeds and favor their own services if they wish.
Ajit Pai followed through on a pledge to try to repeal "net neutrality" regulations enacted under the Obama administration. The current rules treat internet service providers such as Comcast, AT&T and Verizon as if they were utility companies that provide essential services, like electricity. The rules mandate that they give equal access to all online content and apps.
Pai said those rules discourage investments that could provide even better and faster online access.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Bad news for everyone...but we have and can pushed back on bad ideas and not let them happen..This guy and everyone in our government are there to represent all of us not just the rich or our phone and cable companies. We can let them and the business we do business with know it!  Both industry depend on doing the right thing for the most people or they we can jopintly see them out the door and not do business with them.

Ignored By Big Telecom, Detroit's Marginalized Communities Are Building Their Own Internet | Kaleigh | Rorgers | Motherboard.Vice.com | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

Being stuck without access to the internet is often thought of as a problem only for rural America. But even in some of America’s biggest cities, a significant portion of the population can’t get online.

Take Detroit, where 40 percent of the population has no access to the internet—of any kind, not only high speed—at home, according to the Federal Communications Commission. Seventy percent of school-aged children in the city are among those who have no internet access at home. Detroit has one of the most severe digital divides in the country, the FCC says.

“When you kind of think about all the ways the internet affects your life and how 40 percent of people in Detroit don’t have that access you can start to see how Detroit has been stuck in this economic disparity for such a long time,” Diana Nucera, director of the Detroit Community Technology Project, told me at her office.

FCC moves to abandon rural telephone | Sean McLaughlin | AccessHumboldt.net

Access Humboldt joins opposition to FCC's move to push early retirement of copper telephone networks

Along with a broad range of consumer, rural, elderly, labor, civil and human rights, and low-
income organizations, Access Humboldt joined a letter to Federal Communications Commission chair Ajit Pai expressing concerns about his proposal for early retirement of legacy copper telephone networks serving large swaths of rural territory, including much of Humboldt County and the North Coast region.

Access Humboldt's executive director Sean McLaughlin said: "We join this effort to ensure that rural communities are not relegated to second class status in the digital future. Reasonable consumer protections are necessary to ensure that profit seeking corporations deliver reliable, robust and resilient telecom services to every community. We have a long history and a legacy social contract that has paid these private corporations a pretty sum to meet local needs and interests - having collected those funds, profiteers now seek to renege on their obligations as 'carriers of last resort.'"

The group's letter (online here https://ecfsapi.fcc.gov/file/11090039324560/Joint%20Wireline%20Broadband... and attached below) notes that: "Contrary to the proceeding’s stated purpose, the radical rule changes in the draft Report and Order will make it more difficult to achieve the very goals the Commission aims to achieve."
