Why the net giants are worried about the Web 3.0

The birth of blockchain spawned a movement which is set to disrupt the entire tech industry. Blockchain and crypto enthusiasts are calling it the Web 3.0 and it’s looking to make all traditional business models defunct. This is because, in short, the technology will facilitate the decentralization of the World Wide Web, thereby equalizing control and ownership back from the grasp of profit hungry corporations.

The Web 3.0 ecosystem already consists of over 3000 variegated crypto coins and over 900 decentralized apps or DApps (a single DApp can mean a team of up to 50 members, each dedicated to disrupting a specific industry). And even though the industry is still in its infancy, the market cap has already exceeded 800 billion.

Beyond Ethereum: The battle to own blockchain's 'layer two'

Beyond Ethereum: The battle to own blockchain's 'layer two' | IT News | Scoop.it

Ethereum  —  as the current incumbent among general-purpose permissionless blockchains  —  has to date offered the best resources, tooling, and incentives for developers to build on top of its protocol. These “layer-two” projects combine off-chain software with some number of smart contracts (which may include a native ERC20 token) to create markets in which users can trustlessly interact and exchange some digital resource. That resource might be the sMPC of private data (in the case of Keep), live streamed video (in the case of Livepeer), generic loan contracts (in the case of Dharma), a CryptoKitty, or something else. These markets rely on the security guarantees and immutability of the underlying chain. And so the success of a project is, to a degree, contingent on the effectiveness of the underlying chain.

How to Prepare for the Malicious Use of AI

John Lasschuit ®™'s insight:

Before Automating Your Company’s Processes, Find Ways to Improve Them

Before Automating Your Company’s Processes, Find Ways to Improve Them | IT News | Scoop.it

One of the most recent automation technologies to emerge is robotic process automation, or RPA. RPA is a category of software tools that enable complex digital processes to be automated by performing them in the same way a human user might perform them, using the user interface and following a set of predefined rules. What sets RPA apart from other automation technologies is that its ability to imitate a human user of one or more information systems reduces development time and extends the range of functions that can be automated across a much wider range of business activities. It is frequently used to automate financial processes, such as comparing invoices with shipment notices, or transfering data from email and call center speech-to-text systems into transactional systems of record. Many organizations have adopted it for automating back- and middle-office processes, and many have achieved rapid returns on their investments.

Don’t waste automation’s potential on a bad process.

The Five Rules of Blockchain – Ronald Mulder –

Putting data in a block and forging the blocks into a chain doesn’t make data immutable, and it certainly doesn’t make data “true” or trustworthy. A blockchain that exists on a single computer, or on any number of computers controlled by a single party, can easily be manipulated. The true innovation in bitcoin is not the blockchain in itself, but the “open consensus mechanism”. That is: the mechanism that achieves consensus (about the state of the blockchain) between al participants, even when the identity of participants is unknown and participants can freely enter and exit the system.

How To Achieve An Invisible Infrastructure With The Four Pillars Of Multicloud

John Lasschuit ®™'s insight:

Most enterprises understand the overarching principles of multicloud, but the dependencies are often underestimated. Multicloud cannot be an afterthought -- applications must be considered in tandem and holistically as they pertain to the rest of the clouds on the network.

Skill shift: Automation and the future of the workforce | McKinsey

Skill shift: Automation and the future of the workforce | McKinsey | IT News | Scoop.it
Skill shifts have accompanied the introduction of new technologies in the workplace since at least the Industrial Revolution, but adoption of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) will mark an acceleration over the shifts of even the recent past. The need for some skills, such as technological as well as social and emotional skills, will rise, even as the demand for others, including physical and manual skills, will fall. These changes will require workers everywhere to deepen their existing skill sets or acquire new ones. Companies, too, will need to rethink how work is organized within their organizations.

This briefing, part of our ongoing research on the impact of technology on the economy, business, and society, quantifies time spent on 25 core workplace skills today and in the future for five European countries—France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom—and the United States and examines the implications of those shifts.
