Best Educational Apps for Tweens and Teens - Family Circle

Best Educational Apps for Tweens and Teens - Family Circle | IT ideas for personal use | Scoop.it

"Right now, stocking up on stuff like notebooks, printer paper and erasable pens is a no-brainer—but only ingenious moms know which apps can turn a tablet or smartphone into a bona fide educational tool. (In other words, rather than play Minecraft or fire off random texts for hours, your tweens or teens could actually learn something!) Worthwhile options that don't feel like schoolwork abound for iOs, Android and Windows devices. Suggesting them might boost your cool mom cred—my two teens are impressed, at least a little, when I tip them off to an app they enjoy."

SMART Notebook with wikis and math | Joanne Villis

Joanne's focus is definitely learner-centered. Her activities are designed to get students up to the board. She also believes in students all having access to Notebook software in school and at home to create their own resources and presentations.

You can hear her online in the archive of the Sat. April 7 SB Revolution meeting at -- http://smartboardrevolution.ning.com/forum/topics/sbrgvug-meeting-recording-home-page   (starts about 15 min in & it lasts 20 min). She explains why/how she uses a wiki to store Notebook files and lessons for her students. If you're not familiar with using Wikspaces, she's provided the screencast above (embedded by permission; originally in SB Revolution).

Her wikis are designed to be student- & teacher-friendly:

How to Use Restrictions as Parental Controls on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch

How to Use Restrictions as Parental Controls on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch | IT ideas for personal use | Scoop.it

"If you plan on giving an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a child, take a moment to set up some very basic parental controls on the device by using the Restrictions feature of iOS. It only takes a minute to configure, and this will prevent the access of inappropriate content, avoid mature themed media, prevent in-app purchases and incidental charges, disable the ability to download and install new apps, plus prevent the removal of apps that have already been installed on the device."
