10 Leadership Practices to Stop Today

10 Leadership Practices to Stop Today | IPrincipal | Scoop.it
Here's my list of "old school" practices you ought to chuck, and "new school" practices to champion instead:

1. Out: Micro-management, or the need to control every aspect of your company. In: Empowerment, the ability to give your people some rope--even rope to make mistakes without blame.

2. Out: Management by walking around the office; it is no longer enough to be visible. In: Leadership by watching and listening, engaging in conversation, implementing the ideas presented to you, and distributing the results.

3. Out: Pretending you know everything. You don't have all the answers, so why try to make people think you do? In: Knowing your leadership team members and trusting them. Choose great people who have the right skills and fit the culture. And get out of the way.

5 Tips to Create a Cost-Effective Makerspace Quickly - EdTech Magazine

5 Tips to Create a Cost-Effective Makerspace Quickly - EdTech Magazine | IPrincipal | Scoop.it
In the 2015 New Media Consortium Horizon Report, makerspaces were recognized as one the six most important educational technology developments.

“Makerspaces are increasingly being looked to as a method for engaging learners in creative, higher-order problem-solving through hands-on design, construction, and iteration,” the report says.

As Laura Fleming, a library media specialist from New Milford (Conn.) High School, said in the Spring 2016 issue of EdTech: Focus on K–12, a good makerspace is one that puts the learner first.

That being said, creating a makerspace that teaches students the skills to aid them in creative and technological futures doesn’t necessarily require renovations and a rollout of new tech.

Fleming’s space, for example, thrives on donations of old computers from her school’s IT department. Here are five other ways to create a makerspace now.

Convert PDFs to Google Docs to Differentiate Instructional Materials

Convert PDFs to Google Docs to Differentiate Instructional Materials | IPrincipal | Scoop.it
“Recently, we discovered a feature of Google Drive that has changed how we prepare and access materials and resources for our students. As we attempt to make all curricula digital and thus make it available to all students, the idea of using PDFs was always a problem. PDFs are just not editable in most situations, and this was an issue when it came to modifying and differentiating documents. Adobe Acrobat was our “go to” application for this type of conversion, but it was costly and often hard to come by in an educational setting. Note: We still use Adobe Acrobat for complex projects or documents that do not convert well in Google Drive. With the most recent update to Google Drive, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capabilities are better and easier than ever.”

Try This One Phrase to Make Feedback 40% More Effective

Try This One Phrase to Make Feedback 40% More Effective | IPrincipal | Scoop.it

Employees deserve feedback. So we give it--sometimes with great results, sometimes not so much.

But there's one phrase you can use that will instantly improve the impact of the feedback you give--whether the actual feedback is positive or negative.

The following comes from Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code (one of the few books I actually give to friends) and The Little Book of Talent (a book I've written about before) and ablog about performance improvement that belongs on your must-read list.

"

I'm giving you these comments because I have very high expectations and I know that you can reach them.

That's it: just 19 words. But those words are powerful because they are not really feedback. They're a signal that creates something more powerful: a sense of belonging and connection.

Looking closer, the phrase contains several distinct signals:

1)    You are part of this group.

2)    This group is special; we have higher standards here.

3)    I believe you can reach those standards."

The Power Of Leadership Mindsets

The Power Of Leadership Mindsets | IPrincipal | Scoop.it

In the new world of work, the high-performing organizations will be those who can continually transform from within. Start with leadership mindsets.

Kenneth Mikkelsen's curator insight, June 23, 2015 11:50 AM

Change has clearly become the new normal and organizations that can seamlessly navigate the constant state of disruption will best position themselves for success in the future world of work. In such environments there is an imperative for leaders to go first, setting the example for all others to follow. Leaders who approach the change with the right mindsets, and leaders who send the right messages through how they act and behave.

Steve Bax's curator insight, June 24, 2015 4:01 AM

A thought provoking article. Two elements are particularly notable: A quote from Tim Cook, CEO of Apple ...: “We change every day. We changed every day when he (Steve Jobs) was here, and we’ve been changing every day since he’s not been here. But the core and the values in the core remain the same as they were in ’98, as they were in ’05, as they were in ’10. I don’t think the values should change. But everything else can change.” and within the article...

What we typically don’t consider however, is it’s not the overt messages that make or break us, it’s the covert ones, the ones we are not thinking about or aware of. Thus, most times when we find our teams and organizations resisting change, our answer as to why is staring right back at us in the mirror.

Dan Diamond, MD's curator insight, August 11, 2015 5:26 PM

There are four primary type of mindset:

1). BYSTANDERS: the powerless-givers that "wish" they could do something. They are not engaged and don't contribute.

2). VICTIMS: the powerless-takers that yell, "help me!" They consume resources and leave a wake of damage.

3). MANIPULATORS: the powerful-takers that demand, "for me!". They may get ahead for a while but only at the expense of others.

4). THRIVER: the powerful-givers who's motto is "for you". They focus on equipping others to succeed and don't care who gets the credit.

The Must-Have Habitudes of Effective 21st Century Leaders

The Must-Have Habitudes of Effective 21st Century Leaders | IPrincipal | Scoop.it

The conversation around must-have, 21st century leadership skills has been in full swing for years. From business to education; classroom to community, the debate on what is a “new skill” or an “always skill” can be both controversial and confusing.

Although it’s almost certain we will never all agree to a singular list of skills, strategies, and competencies leaders must embody for success now and in the future, we do know what effectively operating and leading in a fluid, dynamic and every changing 21st Century world requires:

The ability to see the challenge and the solution, from every angleThe ability know what questions to ask and when to ask themThe ability to communicate one’s vision passionately and persuasivelyThe ability to connect with others and create an enduring relationshipThe ability to understand your strengths and the discipline to improve your weaknessesThe ability to dream, set audacious goals, and believe they can be accomplishedThe ability to stand out, stand up, and stand beside and knowing when each is requiredThe ability to lead, serve and honor others.

Kudos's curator insight, February 27, 2014 6:23 PM

This is very true. I really like the questions to determine if someone is engaged. We are always looking for the best way to benchmark engagement and to measure it on an ongoing basis.

What do you think are the best questions to ask that can determine a persons engagement?

What do you think are the best types of questions to measure engagement on different levels.

Connection to leadership

Connection to a manager

Connection to the team

Connection to your job

Connection to your future

You can high and low engagement depending on the question and all of these areas should be benchmarked and measured continuously so you can see where you are engaging you team and where you are loosing them.

And remember - you set the course and vision and define their role and your expectations. Then it it up to them to execute, set goals and contribute and only then will they find purpose and engagement. It takes two to tango.

I've heard a lot about SMAR but never really taken the time to look into it. It might be time now that I'm looking at integrating more technology into my classroom. This model clearly supports technology and expects the use of it.

Richard Whiteside's curator insight, February 27, 2014 6:42 PM

Explains a lot about how digital tech can help, though on investigation this seems to be a model developed seemingly from nowhere without much academic work behind it. Example of a simple model stating the obvious? Does it matter that it's origins are hazy? Having had the chance to look into it and its creator, it's interesting to note how popular it is and how accepted it is, without much critique. Is it really that great a model?! Just wondering! Raises a lot of questions.
