Learn your tools! AOPA Pilot: "#iPad: Friend or foe?" #aviation | iPads in Flight | Scoop.it

Since the first-generation iPad stormed into the consumer market—and general aviation cockpits—in 2010, pilot reactions have been mixed. Many swear by the flight planning, electronic flight bag, and weather capabilities; others, frustrated by screen glare, unwieldy mounting, or application overload, are more inclined to swear at it. And some are just curious what the tablet can do.

Nobody _just_ watches TV anymore. apex blog: One kid, two screens…IFE expectations evolve before our eyes #IFE&C #airline #iPad | iPads in Flight | Scoop.it

These days everybody seems to have a predication about the future of embedded IFE. Time and again, the question is asked: “Can IFE really survive in a world populated with touch screen personal electronic devices?” There is little doubt that IFE must evolve (and is evolving right before our very eyes). But after witnessing the “double screen” action of my kid, I wouldn’t be too quick to count it out.

With technology constantly changing, aviation must be able to keep up. With Garmin releasing Garmin Pilot version 6.2 to the world it has unlocked possibilities for pilots all over the world to use the most up to date navigation apps and resources. After recently learning about Navigation in my Aviation course I have come to realise how much work goes into planning a flight before even stepping foot in the cockpit. By having an up to date app with worldwide maps, flight planning and weather updates you are able to step into the cockpit and check all your flight planning against the Garmin Pilot app located easily on an iPad.

App Makes iPad "Mini-HUD" - AVweb #avgeek #aviation | iPads in Flight | Scoop.it

An Oregon app developer has come up with a unique solution to the problem of spotting unfamiliar airports from the air. Paul Mace is offering ARPort, which he says turns an iPad, iPod or iPhone into a "mini-HUD" that displays pushpin locations of airports within 25 miles in the field of view of the device's camera. The pilot or front seat passenger points the camera through the windshield and all the applicable airports show on the screen as pushpins. Move the selection icon under the pushpin to get distance and heading and tap on the icons to get airport information.
